Chapter One
All things considered, I didn't really believe my parents when they told me that we (my parents, little brother and I) were going to be uprooting ourselves from the small town we lived in, all the way across the ocean to the UK. I mean, we had a great life here. We basically knew everyone, I mean, we had lived here my whole 17 years of my life.
So, when they told me of this news, I didn't take it too well. And by that, I screamed at them, ran out of my house, and straight to my best friend since I could remember, Austin. He was a little freaked out to find me sobbing uncontrollably on his doorsteps at 8 o'clock in the morning.
"AUSTIN THEY'RE TAKING ME AWAY!" I cried burying my head into his chest, seeing as how he had my by a good 3 inches.
"Uh...Shell... umm.." He stuttered, wrapping me in an awkward hug.
I look up into his big brown, puppy dog eyes and lost it again.
"I said... my parents... are making...me... MOVE!" Cue more histerical sobbing.
Finally understanding my end-of-the-world-problem, he began patting and stroking my hair, leading me into his house. Passing through the corridor, we turned a right, away from the living room, to the kitchen. I climbed on top of one of the stools next to the island and continued to cry, not as extreme, on the island, while Austin began making me breakfast.
I don't know how long I cried, but soon, something delicious reached my nose. My head snapped up as Austin slide a plate full of eggs, sausage, turkey bacon, and strawberries. My mouth hung open, and my stomach growled in protest of my gawking. I greedily began to stuff my face with the delicious food.
"Feel better Shell?" He asked, sliding into a stool in across from me.
"Of course! Your cooking is the best!" I replied, still stuffing my face.
I had already finished off the plate by then. Sighing, I leaned back and patted my stomach approvingly. Austin chuckled at me, and then looked at me with sad eyes.
"So... are you really moving?" He asked.
"Yeah.... to England Austin! ENGLAND!" A few tears slipped down my cheeks.
"England", he asked shocked, "why would they move you to England?"
"I have no idea. They told me, and I took off here. I didn't know where else to go..." I trailed off.
We both got quiet then. I mean, what else was there to say? I was leaving. To be honest, I was kind of excited now. England! Who would have guessed this? But, at the same time... I didn't want to leave this life behind. I didn't want to leave Austin, nor did I want to leave Cale, Alexandria, Syd... I didn't want to leave anyone behind. All the good times we had shared, they were all coming back to me. The time Cale had jumped over the fence to the water tower and tag our names. The time Syd and I got lost out in the country for 3 hours and blasted music until dark. The times me and Alexandria had cheered together, and competed together. And who could forget all the times me and Austin had shared. We wouldn't be able to get any of that back. I starting crying now, letting out little sniffles here and there.
I could feel Austin's gaze on me, but I knew that if I met it, I would lose it yet again. So instead, I pulled out my 3G IPhone and checked it. The screen glared at me with 3 missed calls and 7 new text messages. I groaned, and saw Austin give me a you-had-to-expect-that kind of look. I rolled my eyes at him, and redialed my moms number.
"Hey mom... yes, I'm fine... no, I'm at Austin's..... what? Really? Now?...... you just told me tod.... yeah, I got you... okay, I'm on my way... bye." I hung up and groaned once again.
"What did your mom say?" Austin asked as picked up my plate and put it in the dishwasher.
"Welllll.. we're apparently leaving tomorrow morning. So, I have to go pack now, which I REALLY don't want too. But, yeah. Like I have a choice in the matter, ya know?"
"Yeah.. I gotcha. Hey! I'll help you pack! Sound good?" The poor boy had gotten so excited. How could I resist that face?
Giggling, I answered that he could. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me out to his car, some toyota thing. No one really knew. I clambered in the passenger side, buckling my seat belt (safety first!), and cranked the radio up. As we drove to my house, I got this nostalgic feeling looking out at the passing trees and houses. Sadly, I knew who lived in almost all of houses. I sighed heavily, remembering things long forgotten, smiling to myself at all the crazy things I had done. Well, I was going to take this new life in England in strive. I was going to make the best of this, dangit! So, with this new mind set, I prepared myself for the huge packing job that awaited me.
