The sun was slowly setting. Hues of pink and purple littered the sky as night dawned on the County Fair. The Fair would close at two in the morning, which permitted an exponential amount of time to try the famous Fair foods, such as deep fried twinkies, and play a few games.
It was supposed to be an adventurous evening for myself. Taking a year off before starting college permitted me to travel and explore. I would go to a variety of different events and museums by myself. Today was no different but the result was far drastic than any other usual trip.
There was a corn maze. Hearing kids run around inside the tall corn stalks forced me to assume that it would be fairly easy if a child could find their way around.
But I had much less stamina than the average child, meaning that I couldn't run a consecutive ten minutes to find the ending. I would have been so desperate even to follow the children out of the maze, but the darkening sky completely decreased the amount of children running around.
So I stared at the sky, watching as the pink and purple became a deep navy blue.
I could hear the faint fair ruckus from all directions, which didn't help my case so I wandered the maze carelessly.
Though that was until I heard shuffling behind the tall corn stalks. The shuffling was slow, but the sound grew as something moved closer towards my location.
Then I was met with a towering figure.
"Good evening," the man smiled anxiously. "Is there any chance you might know where the exit is?"
"No clue. Are you lost too?" I asked him.
He walked out of the stalks. His eyes were a deep brown, with black fluffy hair atop his head and dark stubble. The distance he towered above me was what I took notice of the most.
Being 5'3", he could only be described as tall as the Eiffel Tower. Maybe I had been exaggerating, but I only amounted to his shoulder which was a large difference.
A plaid, green flannel kept him warm from the chill of autumn, but the way he tucked his hands into his pants indicated he wasn't as warm as I thought.
"Mind the company? I don't prefer being alone," he asked.
"I don't mind. I'm guessing you didn't come here alone then?"
"I did, funny enough. I like being around people, but I tend to go places by myself."
David spoke a bit more about his own lifestyle. There were several similarities between us, I noticed. We were the type of people to isolate ourselves. Maybe that's even the abstract reason why we ended up lost in a maze. We were also odd travelers, not venturing to far places but to nearby events and landmarks. He took an interest in photography and even took some pictures along our stroll.
"What about you? Why's a beautiful girl stuck in the middle of a maze at this time of night when she should be tucked in bed?"
"I guess the same reason you're out here. That little love for adventure. I don't have anyone to come home to so I don't exactly need to be home at a certain time. Besides, I find the night to be a lot more beautiful."
I stood frozen when a bright light blinded my right eye. David had his phone out and took a picture, nervously smiling.
"Sorry," he said, scratching the back of neck," I'm a sucker for candids and so I needed a picture taken when you weren't expecting it. Here."
