The bladed moon appeared to be in reaching distance from her bedroom window. She sat at the windowsill, earphones in and feet kicking out as her legs dangled above the fifth floor.
March brought cool winds in the evening, enough to keep the teenager's hair flying back but not strong enough to push her back inside her bedroom from the window she sat at.
"What are we looking at?" A voice whispered in her ear.
A scream escaped her lips and she fell forward, almost falling from the fifth floor of the apartment building. A cold hand latched onto her wrist before she did and pulled her inside.
Her chest was pounding and her mind was in shambles as she stared at the man in front of her. He was clad in a black cloak, most of his face covered.
"Death just saved your life. Pretty ironic, huh?"
"Death?"
The man shrugged.
"Death, Devil, the Loch Ness Monster. I prefer Tyler, but whatever floats your boat. How've you been?" She gave him no answer. "I guess you're the no-bullshit type of person. Well, I'm here to take your soul— yada, yada, yada— you can receive your fate between now and the next two days. No backsies, refunds, or anything along those lines. So when do you want to die?"
As he spoke, the girl stared at him blankly.
"Okay, let me repeat this one more time."
"No—" the girl said. "I heard you the first time and I don't have time for whatever prank you're trying to pull. Get out of my house before I call the police."
"How about, no? I'm the real deal, babe. So when's it going to be?"
The girl played along, still not believing Tyler's claims.
"If you're really who you say you are, then why don't we just go out to eat before you kill me?"
Tyler grinned. "Simple. I like it."
He grabbed ahold of her hand, his skin undeniably cold against hers. The world seemed to blur and she instantly found herself in a booth. Tyler sat across from her, no longer wearing the cloak, but instead a tee shirt and jeans. She could see his face now and quite surprisingly, death was undeniably attractive.
He smiled at her and her heart dropped.
"This can't be happening," she whispered to herself.
"But it is. Sorry, babe. That's just how life works for some people. Do you want a cheeseburger?"
"The Devil likes cheeseburgers?"
Tyler grinned. "Not even death can resist earthly pleasures, right? Now, are you still okay with the whole dying at the end of this meal?"
The girl stared down at her hands as she fiddled with her fingers. "I think I am. Do you mind if we stayed here for a while though? Like a few hours."
"I don't mind at all. Now tell me what you want so I can go order."
And he did. Death, or Tyler as he liked to be called, casually went up to the cashier and ordered a meal. The young girl watched in absolute amazement. Death literally blended into the crowd.
