He was leaning in to kiss me. Holy fuck. NO. Oh HELL NO. Absolutely no. This is my brother in law trying to kiss me right now. This is so not happening. I had enough reaction time and quick reflexes to move my head so Kol ended up kissing the air where my head had been only 2 seconds previously.

“Oh my god. I am so sorry Nicky. I don’t know what overcame me.” Kol apologized, his eyes wide with panic.

“No Kol, uh, it’s, uh, my bad as well. Let’s just not tell anyone about this close call, alright? And uhm, I should be getting home now. I’m a little tipsy now.” I said quickly, avoiding eye contact.

“Let me take you home.” Kol offered just as quickly.

“Let me take it from here Kol” came the voice of Elijah. I did not expect to find him here tonight, but thank God he's here to diffuse some awkward tension.

Ah, Elijah! Always my savior.

“Brother, you should go home soon and you probably shouldn’t tell Niklaus anything about this, and certainly don’t tell him that you’re taking Nicky to mother’s Ball – do not breathe a word of it to him unless you want to be daggered back into that coffin tonight” Elijah warned while helping me to my feet.

“Yes brother, I’ll make sure.” Kol said, finishing his whiskey in one go. He left 300 dollars on the counter. “I’ll pick you up on Saturday, Nicky.” He said to me and then he left the Grill.

Elijah looked at me as if to say, “what have you gotten yourself into now, Nicolette?”

He looked at me with a little pity in his eyes. “It must’ve hurt you deeply to hear that Niklaus is taking Caroline to the Ball.”

“Psh, no. I could care less. I just didn’t want to show up by myself.” Lie. Denial times 200. Elijah was suppressing a smile, and thankfully he didn’t call my bluff. This is when I honestly feel bipolar. I don't want Niklaus, but I don't want any other girl to have him either. I think I'm a little mental.

“Let’s get you home then.” He placed his arms around my shoulders as we made our way outside the Grill.

Elijah stopped us just a few steps shy of his Mercedes to say. “And for the record, you could’ve asked me to accompany you to the Ball. I would always choose you over everyone else. Always.” he looked at me straight in the eyes.

“I know that. But I heard from Rebekah that your mother wanted you to take the mayor, Mrs. Lockwood, so as to form a better bond with the people of Mystic Falls” I mocked. “I didn’t know Esther was pimping you out now.” I snorted.

Elijah and I both laughed. “This lovely task was supposed to be Finn’s but my brother is a spineless tart so he recoiled from the task” Elijah sarcastically said. “Now I get the lovely task of accompanying Mrs. Lockwood.”

“At least she’s good looking” I teased.

“Oh hush. Do not even go there” Elijah said while opening the door of the passenger seat for me.
