“You know, whenever my mother brings our family together like this, it’s tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance. Tonight’s pick is a century’s old waltz. So if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom.” Elijah’s voice filled the entirety of the great hall.
“God forbid we almost missed the dance,” Niklaus whispered to me. “We’ve missed many of mother’s dances before because we were just, ah, too busy having fun, so I thought it was proper to show up for this one.” We both laughed a little, a short flashback of the many, many times we instead had sex or ran off to just be together, rather than attend one of Esther's Balls. I had my arm loped around his arm and I could feel everyone’s gaze on us. I could feel Esther’s gaze boring into our backs as we made our way through the great hall. Niklaus lead me straight towards Kol and when we were both standing in front of him, Niklaus said this barely above a whisper so that only Kol can hear, but of course, all supernaturals with enhanced hearing could hear him as well. Niklaus said “She’s the most important thing to me little brother, treat her as if your life depended on her well-being. I am entrusting the most important part of me, to you, tonight. Don’t make me regret that.” With a little, gentlemanly bow, Niklaus presented me to Kol. With that, Niklaus left us and went to look for Caroline.
Niklaus' POV
“Where were you?!” she reprimanded me.
“Watch your tone young lady,” I clucked my tongue. I did a little bow, as was customary for the dance and we began to waltz. “You totally ditched me and I ended up looking like a great, big, fat loser, all alone at a ball. What the hell Klaus?! I’m your date tonight, you asked me to go to this thing, bought me this stupid dress and then you disappear for practically the entire time this ball’s lasted” she hissed. “I said, watch your tone,” I hissed back, getting annoyed and gripping her arm harder to drive my point home that she should shut up right about now. What is this girl’s problem? I knew there was a great setback to fancying a young vampire and an immature, insecure girl to begin with. “Were you with your wife?” she asked, her eyes slanted as we continued to dance. “Yes, as a matter of fact I was with her and my siblings. Oh, and our mother. It was a little bit of a family meeting, you see.” I said dismissively, hoping that she would just shut her mouth from here on out.
“I know you guys were married for like forever and ever so you guys have history that stretches from here to the moon and she’s practically an original and she’s so beautiful, nobody really compares, and your siblings love her and probably so does your mother. So what I’m really getting at is, I thought you had been in love with me all this time? You’ve been luring me in, trying to make me like you, asked me on a date and all that” she huffed out a babble of words in her frustration. I was beyond annoyed with her at this point that I was even considering subtly breaking her neck to shut her up. Instead I took the semi high road and interrupted her psycho ramblings.
“I’m glad you came,” I said to Caroline. Because you let me see how much I really cannot live without Nicky, I thought to myself. I said that to her though so that her attention needing, insecure self would get some ego boost and so she would finally be stunned to silence, or some sort of the other. Let her think that I fancy her so much right now, if that's what it'll take to shut her up. Caroline just looked at me with a self-satisfied smile. Finally, silence.
