This is how it begins

The day was here. The last day that Ross would be in England. Tomorrow he would be moving back to Spain and I hadn't spoken to him since the beginning of the year. A month of not talking to Ross except last week where he had ran out of my mother's funeral.

Teal was dropping me off to school. She had been doing this for quite a while but it didn't feel the same. I missed when we would ride to school. I missed when he would show up the door or when he would stay over. I had lost something that I was about to lose over again.

"Today's the day." I whispered as I got into Teal's car with my bag in tow.

Teal nodded and got into the driver's seat. "You have to say something to Jamie. It's been so long now. I'm sure you miss him."

"I do. I just wish I could back in time to fix my mistake."

"You can only try and make it right. Talk to him today. He has other friends doesn't he?"

"Yes but we were always together. What am I going to do when he's not there? At least I know he's been there this month."

"Just talk to him. It may be a long time again until you see him. Don't make the same mistake I did with you. I should have come to visit you. The only thing we can do is try."

The rest of the drive was quiet and she dropped me off near the school. I got out of the car, thanked her and began my walk to school. I was a bit surprised to see Susie at the front gates and this time she walked straight to me. She looked upset, her mascara was panda eyes and her hair was a mess. I had never seen this Susie before.

"You need to talk to him Jamie. This past week has been a nightmare. He doesn't want to go, he's been refusing to speak to his Dad. You've had it easy, you've decided to ignore him and I've been trying to sort the mess out. He's hiding in the freaking music room of all places. Go and find him!"

I gulped. "I didn't know. I've been trying so hard. I just didn't know what to do."

"Go and talk to him Jamie." Susie sighed. "For me, you've always been able to understand him better and Leah has. I tried to hard to be his friend but I pushed my sister away in the process. I thought that she was better off without him. I never thought that we would be friends."

"All this time you didn't hate your sister?"

"No but whatever bond we had, it's gone now and it's my fault but that's my problem. Leah's become her own person. So I have I in my own way. Don't lose what you have with Ross. We got a bit of time before school, I'm sure he'll understand."

I nodded and raced up the stairs to the next block and straight into the music room. Luckily I still had about fifteen minutes before school started. I saw Ross sitting on the grand piano in the middle of the room. He was looking at the music sheet and sighed. His fingers were resting on the keys and I walked forward.

"Ross." I said standing in the doorway.

Ross turned, looked at me and then sat facing the piano again.

"How did you find me?" He asked.

"Susie said that you've been refusing to go with your Dad and that you haven't been speaking to anyone."

"Well of course Susie would say that even if it's true. Why are you suddenly interested in my problems, Jamie? I thought you never wanted to speak to me ever again."

"That was a mistake, Ross. I never should have said that to you, yet I did. I wonder if you can ever forgive me for making a mistake."

"Jamie, of course I forgive you but it doesn't make it any different. It's happened and we can never be what we were."
