Chapter 22 - Fear

Jade had never been more terrified of anything in her entire life as she was for her first chemotherapy treatment. She woke up in Justin’s arms on Monday morning and she wanted to stay there forever. The easy up down of his chest was the only thing keeping her calm. As soon as she shifted to get out of bed, the pressure of the babies on her bladder calling her name, Justin’s eyes fluttered open.

            “Good morning beautiful,” he smiled sleepily at her.

            “Morning,” Jade pecked his lips. “I’ll be right back,”

Justin pushed himself up into a sitting position and waited patiently for Jade to return. He was smiling when she padded softly back into their bedroom.

            “Why are you smiling like that?” Jade said as she climbed back into bed, snuggling closely to Justin.

            “I just love that I get to wake up with you every morning. I also think that ring stills looks really good on your finger,”

Jade grinned at him. “I love waking up to you too,” she tried to pull herself even closer to Justin.

            “Babe what are you doing? You’re as close as you can get,” Justin laughed.

            “I just feel safe right here. The tighter I hold on, the closer I am, protects me from what’s actually going to be happening today,” Jade sighed.

Justin then tried to pull her closer as if he believed it would protect her. “Shh. Everything will be alright baby. Just think this is what’s going to make you better,”

            “I’m so scared,” Jade’s voice cracked. “I’ve never been more afraid of anything in my entire life, other than losing you. Not moving away from my family. Not living alone in New York City. Not Slim. Not being in all of the situations I’ve been in before. Nothing scares me more than losing you and losing myself,” Jade said, quivering as she willed herself not to cry.

            “Jade you’re not going to lose yourself. Everything is going to be alright. I’ll be with you every step of the way. I promise,” he pecked her forehead.

            “But you won’t. I’m going with Ryan and Chaz to get my chemo done this morning. All the while you’ll be here in the house. You’ll be working in the studio, and I’ll be receiving chemo,” she snapped.

            “So that’s what the matter is,” Justin said. “You want me to go with you. Jade you know I would if I could,”

            “But you can!” Jade yelled. “That’s the thing Justin, you can come with me but you just choose not to,” Jade sat up, unable to lay and argue with Justin anymore. “It’s been months and you haven’t even tried to leave the house. I need you!”

            “Jade I know it sounds really selfish-,”

            “Sounds selfish? Justin it is selfish!”

            “Okay fine. It’s selfish. But I’m not ready. You don’t get it. It’s so embarrassing and I would feel so uncomfortable and-,”

            “It’s embarrassing that you saved my life?! You would feel uncomfortable coming with me to the fucking hospital to get my very first chemotreatment? Wow Justin. You’re right it is selfish,” Jade pushed herself up from the bed. “Well not for me to sound selfish, but I’m your fucking fiancée! You’re supposed to support me. This is going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I need you by my side! I’ve been here for you through everything. Now is when I need you!”
