Chapter 23 - Nash

Jade sat in her hospital bed with both of her hands sprawled across her stomach, as if she could propel her protection into the baby still inside of her. All she could do was stare ahead, she couldn’t cry, she couldn’t scream, all she could do was stare and hope, and replay the last day’s events.

Flashback

“Jade I need you to breathe deep sweetie, you’re going into labor,” As soon as Pattie said those words, Jade’s entire being went into panic.

            “Labor? No Pattie I can’t be going into labor. It’s too early, the babies aren’t ready. I have fourteen more weeks,”

            “Yes I need an ambulance to that address right now!” Justin yelled hurriedly through the phone. “My fiancé is going into labor fourteen weeks early,” Justin umhummed a few more times before hanging up the phone. “The paramedics are on their way.” He wheeled himself to Jade’s side and clutched her hand. “Everything’s going to be al-,”

            “Don’t say everything’s going to be alright Justin because we don’t know that! We know nothing about being parents yet and we especially won’t know how to care forpremature babies. It is not going to be alright what if they don’t survive and-,” Jade cut off sobbing, unable to finish the sentence.

            “Jade you’re going to the best hospital in all of California. Your babies will be cared for. It’s very common for babies born this early to survive. It’s going to be a struggle but they’re your and Justin’s children, they’ll get through this. They’re strong just like you two,” Pattie said. “Are you still having contractions?”

Jade shook her head. “No they stopped but they’ll come back, they always come back,” she sighed.

            “I love you, so much,” Justin said and kissed Jade’s fingers.

            “And I you,” Jade smiled weakly at him. “Good effort today by the way, you almost hand it.”

            “You’re the determination I needed,” Justin said. “Looks like I won’t be walking before the twins come,” Justin said sadly.

            “The twins might not even come today,” Pattie said. “They may be able to stop your contractions, you never know,”

            “I sure hope so,” Jade said. “Not that Mommy doesn’t want to see you, but I wish you’d hold on a bit longer,” she whispered to her stomach. As if they heard her the twins shifted noticeably in Jade’s abdomen, sending her into another fit of contractions. “Ah!” Jade called out in pain, clutching her stomach again.

            “Looks like they’re as stubborn as we are,” Justin said, trying to make a joke but one could see the fear in his eyes.

The sirens were heard coming down the block and they began to get Jade ready to take outside.

            “Okay Jade I need you to stand with me?” Jade said.

Jade gritted her teeth through the pain as Pattie helped her up. Standing gave Jade some relief but suddenly a sensation rushed through her body and they all looked down at the carpet in horror.

            “Pattie I don’t think they can stop contractions after my water has broken can they?” Jade said.

Pattie shook her head. “No dear I don’t think they can,”
