Chapter 14 - Shock

The sound and smell of hospital was all around Jade; cleanliness, and beeping machines. As she shifted in her bed a pain shot through her torso and her eyesd popped open.

"Jade." her mom said as she realized that her daughter was finally awake. "Oh honey." her eyes filled with tears.

"Justin." was the first word Jade could muster with a raspy voice. "Where's Justin? What happened?" Jade then tried to sit up, another sharp pain rippling through her body.

"No. No. No." her brother said as he scooted the chair next her bed closer to Jade. "Don't movie. Jade you were shot, we sort of." Leukas cocked an eyebrow.

"Sort of?" Jade asked. "What do you mean?"

"That pimp guy pointed a gun at you, but Justin got in the way or rather he took the shot. The bullet went through him and lodged into you."

"No. No. No." Jade began to cry. "Is he okay? Did they catch Slim?"

"They caught Slim, and killed him Jade. He's dead. He can't hurt you ever again. Justin was still in surgery last I heard, he's in bad condition but that was a few hours ago. He took almost all of the impact."

"Dammit." Jade sobbed. "This is all m-"

"This is not your fault." her mom interrupted. "None of it is Jade I'm sure Justin is going to be just fine."

Jade knew that this was the first time she'd seen in mom in three years but she couldn't help but to snap at her naive words. "No mom he won't be just fine! Obviously he's in much worse condition than I am. If the bullet still hit me that means it went clear through him, there's no telling how much damage is done." she instantly couldn't stand to be in the presence of her parents anymore. "Look mom, dad I love you both and I know its been a really long time and a hard day but I feel shitty and just need some time. Can I please call you and tell you when I'm ready for you to come back?"

Jade's mom's mouth gaped and her father wrapped a supporting arm arond her shoulders. "Sure. Call us when you're ready. We love you too." he then turned and retreated with Mrs. Roerig in his arms.

"Jade. They've been worried sick since we receieved the call from some person we didn't even know. They've been worried sick since they seen your face plastered in magazines and you never called to see us." Leukas said. "Cut them some slack."

"I didn't let you stay to give me shit Luke. I need to see Justin. Please, can you take me?"

"Not a chance. You've been through a lot. You're not ready, you're not strong enough. Wait a week or so."

"Luke please!" Jade pleaded. "What if dies or if he's already dead or-" Jade broke off, sobs drowing out the rest of her words. "I can't, I can't Luke please."

"No you're a wreck right now. You need rest. You need time. Just take some time."

Jade huffed then winced. "What's wrong with me anyway? Where did I get hit?"

"Your ribs, you broke three of them. Also the doctors said there was heroin in her system, a lot and that you're going to start feeling the withdrawals of that. They're keeping you here for awhile until you're ready to come home."

"Leukas I'm not going to be coming homfe. Justin's home is my home and that's where I'm going to be."

"Leukas nodded. Just then there was a knock at Jade's hospital room door.

"Come in." she called. In came her cousin Zach Roerig with a grin on his face.

"Its so nice to see your eyes open." Zach said. "How ya feelin'?"

"Sore. Angry. Guilty." Jade confessed. "No matter what anyone says the gunshot to Justin is my fault, he wasn't trying to save anyone else."

"Jade you know how bad he is. Feeling guilty isn't going to change his condition or his future."

"How bad is he? His future?" Jade said with a puzzled look on her face.

Leukas then shot a glare at Zach. "Zach don't-"

"No Leukas don't hold him back. Zach tell me!"

"You don't know?" Zach said. "Jade, Justin took the shot from the back, the bullet barely missed his spine. Apart from his internal injuries Justin may never walk again."

"Oh god. Oh my god." Jade's stomach heaved and Leukas immediately grabbed a basin. Jade heaved into it as deep sobs wracked her body. "Oh my god no." she began hyperventilating. "I ruined it. I ruined his whole life, everything. If he can't walk, he can't dance, if he can't dance he can't perform and performing is his whole career. I think I'm going to be sick again."

"This is why we hadn't told her yet!" Leukas snapped at Zach, he rubbed his sister's back. "She hasn't even been awake for an hour."

"Ow. Ow. Ow." Jade cried as red began to soak her gown. "Oh god, what's happening?"

"Nurse!" Zach shouted. "Nurse, doctor, someone help!" Very quickly nurses and doctors came rushing into Jade's room.

"She needs to go back into surgery. She could've shifted her ribs and punctured something, her stitches have ripped."
