Zane's POV
For the rest of lunch I didn’t really pay attention to what they were talking about, it may sound rude but it was almost as if it didn’t matter. I threw in the occasional laugh every now and again when Luke made a joke so they don’t think I’m ignoring them, which I was but I couldn’t help it. My mind was completely consumed by thoughts of her. I watched as she tucked her hair behind her ear and the light catching her eyes perfectly. I was powerless to it.
I walked in a daze to English class, not paying attention to where I was or what I was doing. I wondered if she had really seen me in the canteen or if it had just been wishful thinking on my part. I wondered if anyone else had been this enamoured with another person before, I hoped there had because if there hadn’t then I was truly worried about myself.
Without even realising it I moved my body out of the way and suddenly a lock of golden sunshine passed by. Immediately pulling myself out of the trance I had been in I stared in awe as Lea walked straight into my English classroom. I stood fixed to that spot, stunned by her presence. I was not one to believe in fate but this was, how could it be anything else other than that? I finally got myself to walk and as I joined the rest of my class I realised that her brothers weren’t in the lesson either. I focused all my energy on not staring at her, only stealing a few glances every now and again to see if she was looking in my direction at all but never did I see her looking my way. Sometimes I would feel like there was a connection within the room but I couldn’t tell exactly to what or where it was coming from.
As the lesson went on I tried to ignore her but I couldn’t help myself, there was just something about her that meant I couldn’t get her out of my head. Every time I blinked all I could see were her bright purple eyes sparkling back at me like amethyst jewels. I tried to concentrate on the lesson but it was so hard, it took a lot of physical energy to make myself listen what was being discussed which was frankly exhausting.
“Zane…are you with us Zane?” The class laughing brought me back to reality, Miss Jenkins was stood in front of me with a mixture of authority and concern in her expression.
“Yes, sorry Miss.” I smiled and turned away from her gaze.
“Good, well anyway class, your assignment for next Wednesday will be to research a book and present to the class why you think it should be considered a modern classic. You’ll be working in pairs for this and before you ask, no you cannot pick your partner.” A huge sigh came from the class even though I’m sure they all expected it. “Ok first pair will be Lea and Zane second will be Lucy and Anthony…”
I was overcome with excitement, the thought of spending time with Lea made my heart flutter. I’d never been so enthusiastic about a project before now but I had all these ideas about what we could do.
I packed my stuff in my bag quickly and when I looked up, she was already walking out the door. I quickly ran after her, “Hey Lea, I’m Zane. Look I was thinking for our project that we could…” Before I even have a chance to finish she cut me off.
“I’m doing the project by myself. I’ll send you a copy of it when I’m finished so when we present it you’ll have something to do.”
With that she turned and with a flick of her hair, walked away to her brothers at the end of the hall before I even have a chance to argue back. Instantly I felt hurt, more than I should have. I felt something inside my tug as if it was trying to break away but just couldn’t find the strength to do so. I watched as the most beautiful girl in the world disappeared from my sight, taking a little part of me with her.
“So she just blew you off?” I’d decided after college that I needed to let off some steam so me and John went to the basketball courts in the park around the corner from my house. Although I had never really played before, John had convinced me it would be a good way to get rid of my frustration. I’d explained what had happened with Lea and though I had been trying to keep my over active emotions hidden, I could tell that by now they were fully on show. “Honestly, it sounds like a great deal”
