Pepper

I've always loved Axel.

I can't remember a time when I didn't.

But I can remember when I started to.

We were 5 and I was recently orphaned, I had spent the whole of the morning crying into my teddy bear as I sucked on my thumb because I hadn't seen my parents for a week. Being 5, I didn't understand why my parents's would never return but I did know that I missed them.

As I sat in the sand box, my mind finally pushing back the weight of not having seen my parents for a week away, these older boys around the age of 8 approached me, nasty sneers plastered on their faces. I could sense the danger before it even reached me.

"Hey, little baby!" One of them jeered, pulling me up to my feet by my hair as I screamed for them to let go of me furiously.

"The little baby is scared is she? Mummy and Daddy've died. What will the little princess do now?" The tallest of the group teased before the one pulling me let go of my blonde hair, sending my toppling to the ground which made me eat half the sand box. Crying and spitting out sand, I wailed as the boys around me laughed at my pitiful state.

Then, in a blur of colour, a blonde boy rushed forward, knocking all the boys around him to the floor before helping me up, grinning at me as he kissed the top of my head softly,

"It's gonna be okay. You'll get through this." He had said and I caught the blue in his eyes just before he ran off, leaving me standing alone in the half-filled sand box surrounded by a bunch of bruised boys who were lying face-down in the box.

Even though Axel has never admitted to being the boy, I'm sure it was him. After all, Axel has always been there for me. He must've saved me that day. I know so.
