You stood there as Dr. Ziegler greeted you a smile,"I was wondering if you would assist me with project I am working on?"
You nodded,"Sure! What do you need me to do?"
"Here, follow me." She said as she led you into her lab. You expected to see lots of gadgets and medical supplies everywhere but upon entering, it was very spaced and clean. It almost looked like an empty room that was unfurnished. Except for the various amount of cabinets and drawers. There was a wide island table in the center of the room and resting upon it was a tiny pot with a plant it in.
Dr. Ziegler walked up to table and leaned closer to the plant."This is what I've been working lately." You stood beside her eyeing the plant. From what you could tell it was dead. The leaves were brown and curled, barely supporting themselves on the stem. One little gust of air and each leaf would fall to the ground.
"Um, Dr. Ziegler? I'm not sure what I'm looking at here." You gave her a questioning look. She opened a nearby drawer and pulled out a syringe with some kind of clear liquid inside.
"Well, (Y/N), I have been researching what has never been done before. I believe that I can find a way to bring back what has been lost," She laid down the syringe beside the pot,"I think I can restore life." She looked at you with beaming eyes, clearly excited about this project. You had to think for a minute to put together her words. Did she just say what you think she just said?
"Do you mean like...bringing back the dead?" You asked with slight hesitation in your voice.
She nodded eagerly,"To rephrase it, yes. That is my goal."
Dr. Ziegler picked back up the syringe and inserted it into the stem of the dead plant. You watch as the roots began to turn a vibrant green color. The colors traveled up the stem into the leaves, making them also turn into a green color. You were captivated by the plant beginning to become more alive. It completely awed you. The thought of something living again after death sounded crazy but this was proving that thought wrong.
However, just as it was beginning to change into its natural state, the roots suddenly turned black and quickly spread throughout the plant. It's leaves instantly crumbled, flaking to the dirt of the pot. You gasped at its sudden change of appearance. It looked in better state before it died again.
What you weren't expecting though, was it started to smoke. A black vapor was now flowing off the plant. "Dr. Ziegler, is it burning now?" You asked backing away just in case it burst into flames.
She sighed,"No, it's not on fire. I see this result quite a bit actually. It starts to work but then it fails. I just can't simply figure out the problem." She tapped her finger on her chin while pouting.
You decided to closely examine the smoking plant and an idea formed,"May I use another syringe please?" You opened your palm as she nodded and gave you a empty one. You carefully injected the needle into the roots and sucked the black matter inside of it.
You held up the needle to Dr. Ziegler,"Maybe you can try doing something with this?"
She took the syringe from you and examined it."It seems I could use this for further testing." A smile appeared on her face,"Yes I think this could help me figure out the problem!" She put the pot and the needle on a tray and placed it in a cabinet. She turned to you with a grin,"Thank you very much, (Y/N)."
You shrugged,"I think you would've done the same at some point."
"I think my mind was thinking too complex instead of thinking simple solutions."
You began to take your leave."Is there anything else you need?" Your foot hovering over the threshold of the lab.
She shook her head,"That will do for now. Thank you again." She returned to her lab and took out more supplies. You exited the room and made your way to an open area. Your mind wandered back to what just happened a minute ago. Bringing something back to life should be impossible. The fact that she was able to replenish a plant's life for even a second was incredible.
