The sky outside is grey and gloomy. Other than our feet hitting the pavement, the streets are quiet. I stay close behind Curtis, my hand tightly wrapped around the machete. We walk single file down the road. Grass is on both of our sides, stretching out for as far as the eye can see. I look back over my shoulder. Meliyah's house looms in the distance. I sigh and turn back to the front.
"Don't worry. We should be there soon."
Curtis looks back to me as I try to keep up with him. I roll my eyes at him.
"Okay everyone. Stop!"
Garrett puts his hand up, gesturing for everyone to halt. We all stop and form a tight circle.
"Alright. The houses should just be up ahead. Is everyone's gun locked and loaded?"
The clicking of guns locking resonates in the air.
"Good. Just like before, we're going to split into groups of two. Jordan, you're with Jonathan..."
The two of them stand next to each other and high five.
"...Meliyah, you're with me..."
She rolls her eyes. Curtis sighs before continuing.
"...and Bella, looks like you're going to be with Creed and Garrett. For now..."
I look over at Garrett. He glares at me. I look back over at Curtis.
"Wait a minute! You want me...to go with them?..."
Curtis looks over at me.
"Yes. Do you have a problem with that?"
I stare at him for a moment. I fail to find my words. He grabs my gun and cocks it for me before thrusting it back into my hand.
"Get in, grab what you can, and get out..."
He grabs my collar and puts his face in mine.
"...And no complaints."
He glares at me before letting go and turning back to Meliyah. I look down at the cement. Creed comes over and places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. I look up and give him a sympathetic smile.
"Okay. Let's head out! Each of us will take a different house. Gather what you can and then get to safety."
Everyone starts moving down the road. Garrett joins us, paying me no attention.
"Come on. Keep your eyes open. I'm not going to be responsible for your death..."
He starts out for the house, paying no mind to either of us. We both look at each other before catching up to him.
______________________________________________________________The inside of the house is pitch black. Garrett turns on the light on his gun and enters first. Doing the same, Creed follows after him. I bring in the rear. The floorboards creak under our feet. I look around. The light illuminates the dust particles floating in the air.
"Everyone take a room and start searching. We don't know where the damn things are hiding, especially after that last incident..."
Garrett sneaks up the stairs and Creed disappears into the living area, leaving me all alone in the foyer. The light around me grows fainter as they go farther away. The only beam of light comes from my flashlight. I look to my left then look to my right. I sigh before deciding to creep into the kitchen.
The beam bounces off the appliances as I swerve the flashlight around. I wave my hand around in front of the light as I search for cupboards to search. The first set of them have nothing inside them. As I open the next one, there's a creaking noise from behind me. I turn my head around quickly. I don't see anything but I can't help it but feel slightly uneasy.
