Brooklyn Bridge, September 15th, 2013: 8:30 AM
A S.L.E.E.T patrol convoy traveled down the bridge, heading to the rendezvous spot in Brooklyn where they had been ordered to wait until the Slipstream portal opened to take them to the S.L.E.E.T base in New Jersey after their patrol ended and they were to report back to General Arcane after patrolling the city for "Freaks".
In case you the reader are unaware, this was the Last resort Squad.
The Squad that was supposed to wait on stand by until whatever time that the Heroes Legion needed them to back them up when all other actions or resorts for action had failed, like their name implied they were a last resort for Metahuman situations.
They would normally be waiting at the base until they were called in by S.L.E.E.T commander General Arcane, to come in and back up Arcane's "Metahuman Task Force" as he had briefed them about a couple hours ago...as they had been ordered by him to do by him.
They were after all called the "Last Resort Squad" for a reason.
But their team captain, a loose cannon known as Cash "Maniac" Marshall, had given them "Higher" orders, and now here he and his team were out in the city in one of S.L.E.E.T's ATV's, searching the city for any dangerous "Freaks".
He knew about what he and his team had been trained to do, the mission was for them to occasionally play back up to some freaks with powers in order to help fight against other freaks with powers?
Sounded ridiculous AND a waste of good resources and good soldiers time back then when he and his team had been formed and briefed about the situation they had been formed to deal with, and it sounded just as ridiculous to him now as he reflected on it all.
Normally as a S.L.E.E.T soldier, cash would be bound by orders by the authority of S.L.E.E.T commander General Arcane...whose general status was more a nickname than a commanding title, just like Cash's "Maniac" nickname...it was nothing more than a rank.
At least that's how it was in both Cash's and Senator Ennis's opinion about his commanding officer.
Mr. High and mighty "General" whatever his first name is Arcane!
He may work for Arcane, but he didn't like him very much...he was too soft on handling terrorist threats as far as he was concerned.
He was more defensive than offensive, which upset quite a few people in and out of S.L.E.E.T itself, especially in Washington.
Arcane as far as he and the other naysayers were concerned was an old warhorse, way too out of touch with the chaos surrounding the modern world to really know how to properly deal with it all and they couldn't wait for the chance to replace him with someone who was more "today"... someone who knew what REALLY needed to be done to secure their country and their worlds future against terrorist, tyrants and that ever encroaching shadow of that enemy organization called F.E.I.N.D.
But even though he held great disdain for Arcane, Lieutenant Cash wouldn't want to get on his bad side.
Few who ever did ever walked away the same after coming face to face with his bad side.
If there was but one reason out of any of the possible other reasons of why exactly Arcane was still in charge of the organization, it was because he was a tough old commanding officer.
