I went in for my regular checkup a week ago. It was about time I did; I've been dodging checkups for years. It's not that bad, don't worry. Nothing's gone wrong... At least, I thought. I wouldn't have gone in had it not been for some breathing problems. I had asthma as a child, over 20 years ago, but haven't had any problems since. I decided to go in just in case I needed an inhaler. As I sat in the sterile waiting room, I nervously tapped my foot as I waited. "Phillip?" the nurse called. I was led into a tiny room with a computer, bed, scale, and the usual stuff. They said the doctor will be a few minutes. I patiently sat on the bed until the doctor came into the room, startling me by quickly opening the door. "Phillip! It's been a while, huh?" "Hehe. Yea. Sorry about that." "Well, better late than never. What brings you in?" "Well, um. I've been having some breathing problems, and as you know I've had asthma as a kid, so I thought it might be that again." "Might be. Let's listen to your lungs." After several deep breaths and some light headed-ness, the doctor sighed. "Well, how about we take an X-ray of your lungs, just for fun." "Oh. Um, ok?" He left me for a few minutes to get dressed in a hospital gown, and then led me to a room with a bed and an X-Ray. About 5 minutes and several weird positions later, the doctor came back in with the pictures. "Phillip, I have the pictures here, and there's something very concerning. This white blob right here is a giant mass of cells inside your bronchials. There's not many options as to what it is other than a cancer mass. Unfortunately, It's so big that it might be too late to try to reverse the process." I sat there, numbly. What was asthma was actually cancer? "Oh." "So what I'm going to recommend is that we do an operation on it in case there is a chance that we can get rid of what's happening. However, all of this is up to you. Do you wish to do it?" I nodded, unable to speak. "Ok. I'm afraid we'll need to operate today, so if you could come back at 5:00pm tonight, then we'll get you in." "Ok. Thank you doctor. See you tonight."
