Chapter 23: His Lullaby

About another hour or so, I heard crunches of gravel and I looked around. When I looked over to the left, I saw what looked to be a boy with a white hoodie with red splattered all over it. "Hi Jeff, did you have fun?" I asked, and his face brightened when he saw me on the porch step. "What are you doing out here? You'll get a cold!" He said worriedly but then a mischievous grin spread across his white and pale face. And It's not like he had one already. "Were you waiting for me?" He asked and I blushed a shade of pink. "N-no! I-I was just thinking out here. That's all." I said awkwardly and he nodded. "Well," He came over and sat by me. "What are you thinking about???" He asked and I blushed darkly. "N-nothing important..." Darn you stuttering. "It has to be because your stuttering again." He stared at me with puppy dog eyes but I couldn't tell him. Not yet anyway. So I decided to make something up but a truthful lie though. "I... I think your dog is...evil?" It sounded more like a question and he then bursted out laughing and I flinched. "Haha! Y-you thing that Smile is e-evil?!" He said in between laughs. "T-that's ridiculous!" I crossed my arms and huffed then looked away. "Fine, if you don't believe me, so be it!" I said, and then I had an idea that I thought was clever but also had something that had to do with confronting Smile. I got up and he stopped laughing. "I'll just have to show you then!" I then grabbed his hand and he looked up at me with confusion. 'What in the world are you doing?! Let go of his hand and stop this! I thought that I said that I would never come in contact with that demon!' I looked down at him and tugged him to his feet and pulled him inside.

'But i said that I needed to at some point so now is that time.'

I literally dragged him all the way over to Smile and I looked at him with fearful eyes but I overcame that feeling with bravery and I took a deep breath. He turned his head around towards me and Jeff and looked down at our hands. Smile glanced at Jeff then back to me and he smiled, looking practically insane when he looked back at me and I dropped Jeff's hand. He got up and walked over to us and stopped when we were only about 8 inches away from each other.

I saw nothing wrong with him. He looked like a normal, every day dog until I blinked. When my eyes opened, I stared at what used to be Smile. His back fur was still black but his white fur was now red and his kind of sharp teeth now looked as if he had a bunch of jagged daggers in his mouth. His eyes were wide open and his light blue eyes were now a reddish orange color. I looked over at Vivian In complete shock and her face was full of fear. She looked down at me and Smile then growled demonically. I then heard static that sounded familiar. Was it...? No, it couldn't be Slender. He couldn't have found out that fast. I then heard whispers in my head but I couldn't make out what it or they were saying. But finally, I could hear the words: "Spread The Word". I suddenly realized why Vivian had passed out, the static was now hurting my head and I looked away from Smile and the static stopped almost to quickly. I looked back at Smile and he was now back to normal. "What in the-?"

"Let's go"

I felt something grab me and pull me away with my hood and I looked back to see Vivian, with a face full of terror. We got upstairs and tugged me into her bedroom and then she let go and sighed. "S-so you weren't kidding. Were you?" I asked and she shifted her gaze to me and shook her head from side to side, meaning that this was not a joke. But to be completely honest, I found this awesome. I mean, it looks like Smile could actually kill something in a matter of seconds like I do. And I had this thought that he was maybe, already killing things. I mean, he just wouldn't be roaming around in the streets just because he was homeless! But I think that me and this little human that's full of sunshine had some differences. "I don't like that thing at all..." Vivian mumbled as if she had read my thoughts. "It's ok, I won't let him hurt you." I said, then picked her up and lied her down on her medium sized bed that could maybe fit another person on there. I looked around and found a chair that I could sit on so I walked over to it and sat down in it. The chair was right by where the pillow on Vivian's bed was and she looked over at me. "Do you promise?" I heard her say and I looked over to her. "Yep, I promise." She smiled up at me and she yawned. "Go to sleep. It's getting late." I whispered and reached over to shut the lamp off that was lighting the whole room. I remembered those words that I had said to her before I had almost killed her if it wasn't for her 'step-father' and I paused. If her step dad never called for her, she would have died, I would be out killing right now, and I probably would have never found Smile. But he did interrupt and this is where I, I mean, WE are now. I'm sitting here in the dark and thinking about what would have happened IF I had killed her. But that if is gone now and I'm happy just the way it is.

"Hey Jeff?"

I heard a voice say and I looked over at Vivian, she was looking at me with half lidded eyes. "Yeah?" I asked. "Can you maybe, uh, sing me a lullaby?" She asked and I froze. "A lullaby? Aren't you to old for those?" I asked, shifting in my seat. "Maybe, but, can you? Please?" She gave my those puppy dog eyes and, even though I was a killer, I had a soft spot for anyone who gave me those eyes, except for when I was on my killing sprees. I sighed, annoyed and I thought of a good one to sing. Something that was about her...

Then, as if a lightbulb had lit up over my head in cartoons, I had the perfect song that could calm her down because of the Smile incident and get her asleep.

"You are my sunshine,

My only sunshine.

You make me happy,

When sky's are gray.

You never know dear,

How much I love you.

Please don't take my sunshine away.

The other night dear,

As I lay sleeping.

I dreamt I held you in my arms,

When I awoke dear,

I was mistaken.

So I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine,

My only sunshine.

You make me happy,

When skies are gray.

You never know dear,

How much i love you,

Please don't take my sunshine away.

I'll always love you,

And make you happy,

If you will only stay the same.

But if you leave me,

To love another,

Then you'll regret it all one day.

You are my sunshine,

My only sunshine.

You make me happy,

When skies are gray.

You never know dear,

How much I love you.

Please don't take my sunshine away."

I looked over at her and I saw that she was asleep. Her eyes were closed and her breathing was slow, just like she was when Smile had scared the life out of her. I smiled, hearing that that she had forgiven me back in the basement and that we made up. And that this has been a really good day.
