Age does not equal maturity

I think when I have kids i wanna refrain from giving them the 'I'll explain when you are older' crap. Rather I'll be the kind of mum to tell them that I'll explain it when i think they are mature enough. I believe this will teach children that the better they behave the more they get treated like adults.

In general I think age is a ridiculous way to define maturity because there are 40 year olds that act like rowdy teenagers and 10 year olds who have to look after their younger siblings or work to provide for their family yet somehow society defines so much of what is acceptable by age.

Just out of interest what do you think should define maturity?
