The rest of December, January, February, and the first half of March passed by quickly.

So many things had happened. The Dolan Twins had turned 17, and we had thrown them a huge surprise party.

Elliot, Evan, our parents, and I had all gone back to London for New Year's, and saw the rest of our extended family.

And then on Valentine's Day, Grayson had surprised me with the cutest little date ever, and we had gotten even closer to each other.

It was a week before the state track meet, and I was training intensely. Coach, Max, and I had been staying after school every day for the last month, each day working on something different.

About an hour after arriving at home, I was fully dressed for my jog.

"Mum, I'm going for a run!"

"Where?!"

"The forest near the river."

"Right, just take your phone, honey" she tells me.

I say goodbye, and walk out the door. I begin jogging slowly, the cool air of late winter filling my lungs.

I loved this forest. It wasn't the most attractive looking of places, but it was great for thinking alone, which I seemed to be doing a lot of these days.

I passed the frozen water hole that Evan had attempted to skate on yesterday, and laughed at the memory.

I jumped over a large tree branch that had fallen on the ground, being careful not to trip over any of the smaller twigs around it.

I stopped as I heard a weird noise.

There it was again.

"Who's there?" I yelled. I didn't really expect that to do anything, but what else could I do?

I heard another sound, this time I could identify it. It was a snapping of a branch. And it was getting louder.

Which meant it was getting closer.

"Hello?! Anyone?!"

I saw a figure approaching, and recognized the face once they were close enough.

"Ethan! You scared the shit out of me!"

He laughed, panting. I could see his frigid breath in the air.

"I saw you a while back by the water hole and was tryna catch up with you. Damn girl, you're fast!"

"Why were you following me?" I asked.

"When you say it like that, it makes me sound like a creep," he laughed lightly, "I just happened to see you running by and wanted to say hi. So...hey, I guess," he waved awkwardly.

"Hey, how have you been? I know we haven't really talked in some time," I say.

"I've been good. Follow me, I know there's a bench a couple of yards that way," he points east, deeper into the forest.
