I fell asleep still on that bed, thinking about our conversation. After I had said that if I got out, she would too, she said, "Thanks, but how? I mean, I want to leave, but I have never been able to."

"I don't know. I just know that if I get out, either on my own or through a rescue team, you will be with me. There is no way I would leave you behind."

"Thank you. I can't believe you would risk it. I don't even know if I have any family left."

"You've been generous and helpful. It's the least I could do."

"Well, good-night. I will see you in the morning."

"Good night." She left and I drifted off to sleep. In my dream, I was in a peaceful place, returned home, and knew that Mitzi was safe.

I woke up that morning, still in the bed. Apparently, I was supposed to stay here until my full health returned. I heard the door creak open and I sat up to turn towards it.

"I heard your conversation with Mitzi and if you think it will work, you're dead wrong. Try it, and you will suffer. So will she. Come here." I got up and walked to him slowly, scared of what might be about to happen. Before I knew it, a hand back slapped me and I was on the floor, my lip bleeding. "That is supposed to discourage you. If you try anything, your punishment will be much worse.

I couldn't get up. My arms were too weak and I needed my inhaler. He left, but I remained on the ground from fear and from the dull ache in my head. "Rose!" The voice sounded far away. Hands were upon me as my head was lifted. I looked at her. She seemed hazy and her voice muffled.

I barely go the strength to say, "I need the inhaler." She got up and dashed out. Seconds later, she was back at my side with what I needed. I pressed it and I felt better, but I was still too weak to stand on my own. Mitzi helped me up and to the bed.

She left for a few minutes and came back with some food. I ate it slowly. She dabbed my lip with a cold washcloth, causing it to stop bleeding.  I barely noticed that she left the room again. All of a sudden, I felt tired and dizzy. I was falling asleep. Soon, I wasn't able to fight it anymore. I slipped into a silent, blissful darkness for I don't know how long.

I woke to the sound of arguing in the hallway. I was still on the same bed. "Why would you do that?" I heard Mitzi yell.

"She needed to be warned."

"Drugging her is not the answer! She's been out for three days now! How would she know what's going on? I think she got the message when you caused her lip to bleed!"

"You know what? Shut up! If you're so anxious, you should just go in there with her and try to help." I gasped as I heard a hand make contact with Mitzi. I immediately got up, but had to wait, because I was dizzy. Soon after I made slow progress towards the door when it suddenly opened. Mitzi fell in and I rushed to her.

"Mitzi!" I knelt down. She was unconscious. I checked her pulse, as I had learned in first aid class. It was normal. Then I noticed that she was bleeding from a wound on her head. I rushed to my bedside to look for anything that might help. All I found was a washcloth. I grabbed it and ran back to her side. I pressed the makeshift bandage to her head and applied a gentle, but firm pressure to stop the bleeding. Then I grabbed my pillow and levelled her head. Finally, the bleeding stopped.

It was then that the door burst open once again and the man came in, his face filled with rage. I stood up, but didn't move. I would not abandon my new friend. "Step away from her. Now." His voice was deadly calm.

"No. I will not leave her." His face became red. I stiffened as he moved toward me with deadly accuracy. A knife suddenly appeared in his hand, but I didn't budge.

"Now." His voice was almost a whisper. I shook my head. I knew that was a bad choice, but I would rather do that than to leave her side. "You don't want to argue with me." He raised his voice slightly. I shrugged, all too aware of the danger I faced. He swung the blade just inches from my face. "Fine. You'll just pay her consequence, and then yours."

I shrugged again, not about to leave her still. He grabbed my arm and pulled me towards him. "Let's go." He pulled me towards the door. He stopped for a moment and dragged the blade across my arms. Then he did the other. I winced at the pain, but wouldn't let myself scream. "You can only guess what you're punishment is. That was hers. Now let's go."

I wondered what was going on until I remembered the conversation he had with the other man. I was terrified.
