Calming Water

For the next two years, Anabella trained to master her earth powers, with the help of her father, who was a powerful earth faerie himself. She trained and trained to master them and when she did she continued to train so that all of her powers could work in harmony with each other perfectly, never once faltering.

Now, with three strong powers she continued to help others, she continued to heal earth that had been harmed, and light the way for others, and keep the floors of the forest free of any pollutant. Yet, she still felt as if something was missing.

That something missing was found late one night in November as she was wandering through the forest making sure people were safe and warm and had enough light. As she was wandering she heard the scream of a boy in the distance. Instantly she willed the air to raise her up and bring her in the direction of the scream. As she was soaring through the sky she heard the scream again – much closer now – and looked down to faintly see something splashing in a body of water.

Anabella willed the air to bring her down and when her feet touched the ground she moved towards the water carefully. Reaching the edge of the water she tried to peer through the darkness but was unsuccessful and could only see a faint shape in the water.

Figuring she would not be able to do anything if she could not see, she commanded the earth to make a spot for a pit of fire to burn, and then called upon fire to light her way.

Finally, with a fire burning bright to the left of her she was able to see and what she saw petrified her.

In the body of water that was quickly freezing over was a man, who appeared to be about 20 years of age in nothing but a thin t-shirt, fighting to keep his head above the water as something tried to pull him below. As Anabella looked closer she saw that the water was swirling in a circle around the man and it was the torrent that was pulling on him, forcing him to stay in place and attempt to keep his head above the freezing water.

Anabella screamed to the man in the water, "Hold on! You need to stay calm; I am going to get you out of there."

The man screamed back to her, "Please, hurry! It is pulling me under. Please!"

Knowing that she didn't have much time Anabella called on the wind to grasp the man's arms and pull him out of the water, but he did not move. Then she called upon earth to form a vine the man could use to haul himself out of the water but that didn't work either, the raging water only pulled on the vine and swallowed it, taking it into its swirling depths. Not knowing what else to do, knowing that her fire will do nothing and that the man in the water screaming for help does not have much time left until he is completely pulled under, Anabella looks towards the starry night sky and reaches out for her father. Her father always knows what to do and even though he may not actually be there with her at that moment he is in her heart and memories, and he must have said something that could help her through this.

Finally, something he said to her came to her mind and she thought, what are the chances? But decided that it was her best shot and so she gave it a try, determined to rescue this man.

She reaches out her hand over the water, pale white palm facing downwards and imagines calm waters. She imagines the first rainfall of the growing season and the joy that comes along with it. She imagines the lake everybody runs towards when it is hot out, trying to get away from the sweltering heat. She thinks of calm water and the energy that comes along with it and imagines this energy as a blue glow that is flowing from her hand into the raging waters holding captive a presumably innocent man. She imagines the waters below her calming down, the torrent becoming a small wave until it finally stills, all the energy gone from her hands.

When she looks down into the water it is still. It is calm and peaceful, no longer having an angry energy but rather a nice and content one. She smiles, knowing she has gained a new power.

The shouts from the once drowning male pull her out of her thoughts and she quickly turns towards him, only to see that he is beginning to sink under the water, all his power and energy spent from keeping his head above water for so long. Without a moment of hesitation Anabella dives into the freezing cold water head first and swims to the man. When she reaches him, she wraps an arm around his waist and pulls him to the edge of the water. Getting to the edge she hops out and pulls the man up and wills any water in his lungs out with a simple wave of her hand.

When the man sits up and is able to speak again he spills out a multitude of "thank you"s and begins to explain how he got stuck in the water. Anabella pays rapt attention to the story of the young man and easily brushes off the thanks saying to not thank her but rather help someone else as she did for him. The male, named Jack as Anabella learned as she guided him home, easily agreed and stopped paying her thanks but rather just giving her thankful smiles.

Once she lit the way with fire for Jack to return to his home, she made her way back to her own only then noticing a slight stinging sensation on her upper right arm, close to her shoulder. She knew what to expect when she rolled the sleeve of her light blue sweater up but was still surprised when she saw the exquisite mark. On her upper right arm lay an image of a light blue raindrop falling into a dark blue sea of water that wrapped around her arm and ended in a wave that seemed to curl in on itself like a real wave.

Anabella was ecstatic to have a new mark and was pleased that her dad had said those words to her all those years ago, so that she had the will to try to save Jack's life. Anabella again replayed those words in her head, amazed at how true those words were, "You, my little faerie girl, are special, you cannot be restrained to one element."

The newly adorned faerie returned to her home where her mother and father awaited her and told of her new adventures then went to sleep with a smile on her face; happy she was able to help someone else.
