*Flashback*Darkness was the only thing that could be seen. Silence was the only thing that could be heard. The prisoners knew better than to fill the cells with light and sound. They all knew the consequences for misbehaviour. Even if they were innocent. Even the children had experienced the consequences. No one was exempt.
Footsteps slowly filled the silence. It could only mean one thing.
They had a visitor.
The man walked with confidence through the corridors, guided by a solitary candle. No other sound was made. With each footstep, the anxiety of the prisoners became stronger. The children started to quiver and shake. They were all in one cell, with only one person whom they could call their protector. With each footstep, his heart beat quickened, not out of fear but anticipation. 'Today...... I will definently.......' thought the boy as the soldier stood in front of the cell. The barred door slid open.
"All of you, in a line, this instant!" barked the man. He was an ugly man with a scar that ran from his right temple to the bottom of his right cheek. It gave him an intimidating look, one that definently scared the children.
The children had no choice but to obey his command. They didn't want to be beaten again. They quickly ran to their places and bowed their heads timidly. The only one who dared not to was Kenji, the eldest of them all and their leader.
The scarred man said nothing as he observed the children's faces. He started to walk behind each child, making no further attempt to speak. The eerie silence frightened the children more than anything. The chains that bound them to one another were silent. No rattle was heard. There was no sound.
"I will give you one chance," stated the man, breaking the silence. "Tell me, who tried to run away?"
No answer was given. No other prisoner dared to raise their voice, to protect the children. It was every man for himself.
Without a warning, Kenji was struck from behind. He let out a cry of pain before falling to his knees. The force behind the impact forced the other children to be dragged down as well.
"It was you wasn't it?" sneered the man. He then continued to beat Kenji. The young man started to bleed but made no sound. He knew that it was better for him to be beaten than the younger children.
The chain connecting Kenji to the others suddenly broke apart. It was no surprise since the metal was rusty.
"If you will not reply, then I will find someone else," stated the man before turning towards his next victim.
His eyes landed on a boy younger than Kenji but older than the rest. With a knowing glint in his eyes, he grabbed the boy by his neck and lifted him up. The boy suddenly had no floor to support himself and was dangling in the air. The chains around his neck started to choke the boy and the chains around his ankles rattled from being moved around.
Kenji knew he had to take down the man but there was a sudden weight on his back. Two guards that were hidden in the shadows were currently pinning him down.
"LET HIM GO!" yelled Kenji as he struggled to get up to no avail. The two soldiers had no trouble trying to keep him down. The other boy, however, was a different story.
He started to choke so hard, it could be heard throughout the tower. The chains rattled loudly as the boy tried to find solid ground.
"NO! Please..," begged Kenji. He didn't want to see another dead body. He didn't want another person to die because of his weakness.
His wishes were not granted.
The rattling stopped. The choking sound stopped. A heart beat stopped.
Kenji let out an anguished cry and started to weep. Another death. One he could've prevented but was unable to.
"Hahahahaha!" laughed the man. "Your face is absolutely hilarious," snickered the man. "Just another thing that will help me to sleep better tonight. Thank you for your services. They were very helpful."
With that, he dropped the dead boy and turned to walk away. Kenji was abnormally quiet. Tears were no longer running down his face but his breathing alerted the soldiers that he was angry. The soldiers turned around to see what Kenji would do.
Kenji lifted his head, started at the man's face and for told, "One day, I will get out of here and I will kill you."
The man looked unfazed. Instead, he was amused. "If you survive that is," and he turned to leave.
"Oh I will," replied Kenji. "Just wait for me, I'll kill you with my bare hands."
