'Where am I?' thought Kenji. His shirt was soaking wet from his sweat and he was breathing heavily. His eyes adjusted to the dark which helped him to realise that he was in a cave. 'It was just a dream...'
"Are you alright?" questioned a voice, startling Kenji. He turned around to see Mizuki staring in his direction, her grey eyes glowing from the moonlight.
When he realised that she was patiently waiting for his reply, he answered, "Of course I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
The girl scoffed before replying, "because you've been doing that for the past three nights. Where are we going anyway?" complained the girl.
Her confusion was understandable. After the night that Mizuki admitted that she was Yijun's daughter, Kage and Kenji immediately became silent and left her by herself. The girl, however, was slightly dizzy after waking up so she decided to go back to sleep. The next day, Kenji and Kage woke Mizuki saying that they were going to go somewhere and she had to come as well. Since she couldn't do anything else, she followed the men.
It had been the third night since they left that Kenji had woken up in fear. Quite frankly, Mizuki was annoyed. She already had to deal with Kage's snoring, how was she to deal with fearful panting as well?!
"I know you're not alright and there's no point in lying to me," stated Mizuki.
She then stood up and tried to find her way to Kenji's side. Kenji was busy trying to calm his frantically beating heart and didn't notice the girl until she placed her hand on his shoulder.
"What are you doing?!" snarled Kenji as he pushed Mizuki away. The girl fell on her back and let out a startled cry. Kenji immediately felt guilty since he knew that she wasn't the reason of his anger.
Without any concern, Mizuki dusted herself and sat back up. Her unseeing eyes stared at Kenji and he felt as though she was staring into his soul.
"I know you don't trust me," started the girl, "but I have had to trust complete strangers for my whole life. It's kinda hard to be independent when your blind."
Her solemn expression managed to distract Kenji from his fear and he listened intently at what the girl was saying. He didn't realise that the roaring snores had suddenly become silent.
"I don't know what your business is but my father has something to do with this, doesn't he?" asked the girl. When she realised that he wouldn't be answering, she continued, "I don't know what type of person you are or what to your plan is. All I'm asking is that you give me a chance to earn your trust."
"Why would you want to warn my trust?" questioned Kenji. He was confused as to why she would want to do such a thing. "Most people would try to escape and forget that their family was murdered... so what are you planning?" questioned Kenji, distrust in his voice.
Mizuki sighed in disappointment. "Those people might have been blood-related to me, but that does not mean they are my family." She turned her head so that her face was looking at the night sky. "I don't know why but... there's something about you that makes me feel safe. Don't asked me why, I have no idea. I just...... it's been a long time since I've felt this safe. If it means that I have to stay with you then so be it," stated the girl. Her voice had grown silent as though she was embarrassed to admit such a thing.
Kenji contemplated this as he stared at the night sky. The fire had already stopped burning but it was a warm night. The stars were shining brightly and there was a beautiful full moon to help shine a light in the darkness. Although it was night, there were still signs of life. The night was filled with sounds from the animals that were awake. He suddenly felt sad that Mizuki wasnt able to see the night's beauty.
"It is as you said," Kenji said slowly, "I do not trust you. However, I am willing to give you a chance. Just as you said, your father is involved in this thus so are you." He stopped as he assessed the girl's facial expression. Her face was as blank as a canvass waiting to be painted.
"So....," started the girl, "how about we all enjoy the night sky?" She had made her voice louder, momentarily confusing Kenj.
"I was wondering how long it would take before you invited me," replied Kage. He stood up and sat down next to Mizuki. Kenji was slightly peeved that he forgot about Kage's presence.
A comfortable silence fell on the group as the two enjoyed the scenery. Mizuki was content with hearing the noises.
"Wow," commented Kage. "This reminds me of a funny story about Kennie that happened last year."
"What is it, tell me!" exclaimed the girl excitedly.
"Don't you dare, Hage," intervened Kenji to no avail.
And as the night grew older, the three travellers were lost in conversation, momentarily forgetting about that darkness that was in their world.
