The car ride home was quiet. Winnie didn't really know what to say after Reid confessed to having been drugged as well. Spencer didn't want it to be silent, he wanted to share his story with her. Maybe if he told someone like Winnie she would understand why he kept the bottles of dilaudid. But judging on her reaction to the topic he decided to keep it a secret.
Winnie hated the fact that she had been drugged. She was very cautious of went into her body. She didn't smoke or do drugs and she rarely drank. She probably would have drank more if she had not been kidnapped at the time of her 21 birthday. Although, she didn't have any friends or family to take her to a bar if she hadn't been kidnapped.
Winnie's mind kept wonder to sad thoughts like that. She hadn't had a birthday party the past 3 years. That wasn't true, she thought. She never had parties before she was kidnapped either. The last party she could think of that could classify as a party was when she turned 9. A few of her teachers brought her into the teachers lounge and gave her cake. They had strung up a few streamers and sang happy birthday, but the principle heard the song and shut down the "party".
A silent tear fell down her face. Spencer noticed her wipe it away. He thought it was because of his talking about the kidnapping.
"Winnie, i'm so sorry. Please don't cry." Spencer said. he felt terrible. "Forget i said anything."
"No. It's not you. It's just i thought i missed so much while i was gone and now that i'm back i realize that i never really had anything. " Winnie wiped another tear away. This is stupid. She thought. Stop being so emotional.
"Hey, it's okay. You have me now." Spencer meant every word.
"But i can't stay with you forever! We barely know each other!" Winnie was really upset now. She liked Spencer a lot but it was true, they've only known each other for a few weeks. She glanced away from the road to Spencer. He almost looked heartbroken. "It's just i want to get things back to the way they were."
"You want to go back to Georgia?" Spencer asked, sadness laced in his words.
"I actually live in California." Winnie said. "Well, where i used to live. My dads house is in Georgia. I was on my way to visit it before i was kidnapped."
"Oh," California? That's so much farther. Spencer thought.
They sat in silence until they got back to Spencer's apartment. Winnie wanted to stay but it just wasn't practical. Her whole life, as boring as it was, was in California. Spencer wanted her to stay too but he knew he couldn't just keep her here.
Together they entered the building and went to the elevator.
Out of Service
Spencer looked at Winnie for what felt like the first time since the conversation in the car. "Looks like we're taking the stairs."
"Guess so." Winnie said her mind still on returning to home. They walked to the stairwell and started to climb. Almost at the destination, Spencer voices a thought.
"Let me go with you."
"What?"
"Take me with you. You'll need help getting everything back to normal, finding a new place and all your stuff." Spencer said.
"What about work?" Winnie asked.
"Yeah, i could help you get a job too!" Spencer said. Winnie laughed.
"No, i meant your work." She smiled. Spencer smiled too, he loved it when Winnie smiled. It seemed to make everything brighter.
"Um, i have vacation days." Spencer remembered. By this time they were done climbing the stairs and Spencer took out his house key. He unlocked the door and held it open for Winnie.
"I couldn't ask you to do that!"
"You didn't ask I offered. And i don't mind helping out a friend." Spencer smiled at Winnie.
Winnie thought it over for a bit, weighing out the pros and cons. She really did like spending time with Spencer but that was one of the cons, she didn't want to get too attached to him. Not because he isn't a nice guy but because everyone she ever cared about ended up dead. And she did care a lot about Spencer. She was also worried Spencer might not like her quite like the way she liked him. Winnie wasn't very good at social ques and Spencer wasn't really good at sending them so she really couldn't tell if he liked her in any way other than a friend. He also did just say "Helping out a friend." But some of the looks he gives her when she wasn't looking could be considered more than friendly.
Finally, she looked up at Spencer, her decision in mind. But she quickly changed her mind upon seeing his lovely green eyes, full of hope.
"Only if i get to pick out the travel snacks."She sighed.
"Of course! Thank you so much. This is gonna be fun!" Spencer then practically jumped onto the couch. Winnie plopped down beside him.
"I wonder where my cactus ended up."
