I'm now in my sixth year of Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. I've grown used to the craziness but the school has new surprises to offer each year.
I was walking up the spiral staircase with one hand running up the railing and the other clutching tightly to my books. I was on my way to my second class of the day which was Divination, a load of bullshit if you ask me. I was surrounded by echoing footsteps but one pair of feet grew louder catching up to me. A familiar pair.
"Hey Bri!" Avery said. Avery was my best friend. She is the same Ravenclaw that splashed me with lake water that first night at Hogwarts. Turns out, she's not always that annoying.
"Hey," I say with a straight face although on the inside I'm quite happy because I look forward to my classes with her. All we have together are Divination and Care of Magical Creatures. Avery loved Care if Magical Creatures. She has a huge heart for animals. My favorite class was always Transfiguration.
"Ready for the hippie's class?" Avery asked, her blue and white tie swinging back and forth as she walked. Her nickname for Professor Trelawney was "the hippie." Avery had explained to me what the whole hippie movement was. She is muggle born so she grew up in the normal world. She had been educated about that history. I had not. I grew up learning stories about wizard wars and boring old witches. And of course, the most famous story among wizards, Harry Potter, the boy who lived. He was now in his fourth year of school.
"I guess. But I swear to God is she predicts that I'm going to get AIDS one more fucking time I'm dropping the class."
Avery giggled and we made it up the stairs to Trelawney's dark, musty classroom. My face contorted when I caught a whiff of whatever candles Trelawney had lit. It smelled different in that room every day. Avery and I took our usual seats in the corner of the room at our favorite little round table.
As the rest of the class was filing in, I reached under the table to find the drawing Avery had taped there a couple weeks back. I looked at it again and laughed. It was a drawing of me dropping a bludger on Carli's snobby little head. The picture moves so whenever the ball crushes her head, little scribbles come from her head that look like blood. The ink version of me has a little smile on her face that grows when Carli's head breaks open. I laugh just to myself and Avery, and she joins in knowing what I'm looking at. I quickly return it to its place under the table and prepare myself for the lesson.
The hippie walks to the middle of the room from where she was standing next to the door welcoming her students.
"Hello again beautiful children. Today, we will continue with our omen studies. There are several ways to find an omen. Another technique we will use today is Tegnlistic water." Trelawney said.
"What in the world is that?" Two voices say together. I look back to see it's the Weasley twins.
"Dear sons, it is a potion generously handed onto us by Professor Snape." Everyone moans at the mention of his name. Hippie shudders a bit because of our reaction.
"Rid of your negativity please. It's bad for your auras. As I was saying, this potion is first used for you to dip your wand in. It is then placed gently to your forehead and you recite the phrase 'Avslore tegnantes'. Then, tap your wand to blank parchment and a shape will appear. Different shapes and colors have different meanings that you can find in your textbooks. Good luck children, and see into the future!"
I roll my eyes at her last comment and look at Avery. She is just sitting there. I look at her then slowly turn my head to look at the bottles of potion at the front of the class, then back to her. I sigh dramatically.
"Fine I'll get it," she says. She gets up to get the materials we need. When she gets back, she is eager to try.
"Me first," she says. She twists the top off of the bottle and sets it down gently. She dips the end of her wand into the he potion and places it to her forehead as directed to. I can hear Trelawney in the background randomly saying things like "broaden your minds" and "gaze into the future!" Avery expertly quotes the spell. She speaks clearly and loudly with purpose. "Avslore tegnantes." The tip of her wand glows a pretty blue. Her face lights up with excitement. That's the beauty of magic. She then lowers the wand to meet the parchment. By this time the hippie has already run full speed to our table to observe. She looked pretty impressed. No other team had gotten that far yet so she was eager to see what happens. The blue light dripped on the parchment like ink. It spread across the paper forming a light blue shape. We awaited the outcome with Trelawney breathing heavily on my shoulder. Her breath smelled like peppermint that day. It took the form of a bird. It was kinda cute actually.
"Ooh what does that mean?" Avery asked Trelawney.
"Oh my dear girl! That's a magpie!"
"Which is..."
"It's a bird that brings great fortune, great fortune indeed! It means happiness and success! Read more about it on page um, oh dear I think it's 234 if I'm not mistaken."
Avery eagerly began flipping through pages to find the magpie.
"It says I'll get a new exciting career!" She told me.
"Isn't the color suppose to tell you something too?" I ask.
"Oh yeah," she turns one more page to find the light blue that matches hers. Hippie had already gone to another group at this point.
"It could mean a LOT of things," her index finger followed the multiple possible meanings all the way down one page and then another.
"I'm just gonna say it means all of the positive words in here." She says. "Your turn."
I take out my wand from my inner cloak pocket and dip it in the potion. I rest it to my forehead as Avery had done and said,"Avslore Tegnantes." I instantly noticed a bright red light. It's kind of an intimidating color so it worried me a bit. Avery looked intrigued. I placed it to my parchment. It spread into the shape of a rose.
"Red rose?" I asked Avery gesturing for her to skim through the pages for me. She found rose first.
"Under rose it just says 'meaning varies depending on color,'" She says.
"Then find what color means what!"
"Uhhh, here we go. Red on a rose means love or passion. It could also mean desire." She explained.
"But I'm not in love with someone right now," I argued.
"Maybe it just means in the future."
"I guess."
I heard George Weasley start to tease his brother.
"Freddy's got a girlfriend. Your in love!"
"Shut up George! It's obviously talking about my future wife who, by the way, will be much hotter than yours!"
"Yeah right!"
To my entertainment, they kept arguing. We put away our materials, and by we I mean Avery, and waited for class to be dismissed. When it was, I glanced down at Fred's paper on my way out. It was a red rose, identical to mine.
