There was snow falling now. The cold wind caused a slight whistle to be heard near any window. The Whomping Willow had snow piled on every branch. Every once in a while it would choose to throw some snow towards the students. All of this put me in a good mood. I enjoyed sitting by the fireplace in the common room with a cup of coffee or cocoa and stir it with a peppermint stick.
Fred and I had been spending much more time together. Our conversations had become less awkward. He always gave me looks during Defense Against the Dark Arts and Divination. Each look causing me to look down shyly and smile. Each time he got me to smile he lit up with joy, obviously proud of his ability to entertain me. And we had a new routine during meals in the Great Hall where we send letters back and forth through the air. A long journey for the piece of paper but it's worth it. Avery, of course always tries to read them but I never let her.
One morning, we had been having a conversation like this during breakfast. He had taken to sitting at the very end of the Gryffindor table so we can see each other as we read the other person's notes.
You ready for the game tonight?
I wrote. I wrote this in the best handwriting I could muster. I tapped the words with my wand to make them move up and down slightly. I thought it was cute and subtly flirty. I folded up the parchment and aimed it toward Fred. I gently blew on it and it sailed through the air to land in front of Fred. His face lit up with excitement and looked at me before reading it. He looked back up at me and smirked before returning to the paper so he could respond. I took a bite of a warm buttered biscuit while he folded it up. He sent it back and I caught it. Avery didn't even bother to turn around. She stopped asking about it because she'd been told no so many times before. I opened up the paper and my words had vanished and were replaced by his.
You bet. Your precious Slytherin will be crushed up and turned into owl feed when I'm done with them.
I looked up to see Fred winking at me. I shook my head at him and wrote my next note with the remainder of my biscuit in my mouth.
I can't believe I'm saying this but I hope Draco Malfoy does well and kicks your ass.
He replied with:
Their beaters couldn't keep a bludger away from him even if it was moving 2 miles per hour!
So I wrote:
Okay okay, in all honesty I'm routing for you, I promise. Good luck tonight.
I almost finished the note with a little heart but I decided that was too much so instead I chose to doodle a little rose. I folded it up and blew. It didn't travel very far, however because a tall figure was in the way. Malfoy had caught it.
"Sending love notes, eh Wallace?" He asked all cocky. I stood up and reached for it.
"Give it back, Malfoy!"
He pulled it away.
"Uh, uh, uh!" He said stretching his hand up higher and higher. Fred had noticed this and had already begun walking my way.
"Let's just have a look then shall we?" He kept me back while opening it up.
"Awwww, wishing your boyfriend good luck, Wallace?"
Then Fred's hand had grasped Draco's wrist.
"I believe this is mine Malfoy." He then grabbed the paper and easily pulled it away from Malfoy. He shoved Malfoy in the chest.
"Now go sit back down."
Avery was now looking at all of us and looked very worried, her hand rested on the seat next to her on her wand.
"You've got a lot of nerve putting your hands on me, Weaselby!" Draco said.
"Say another word to me and you're dead Malfoy." Fred threatened. The teachers' attention were on us now. I sat back down so I didn't look like I was a part of it.
"Why don't you go back to your hovel with your fat mother!" Draco hissed. Almost everyone in the Slytherin and Ravenclaw tables were looking. McGonagall was on her way there now. I tried my best not to get involved. I just ate my breakfast at a rapid speed. Fred ripped out his wand and grabbed Malfoy by the shoulder then placed the tip of his wand to his throat.
"What would you prefer? To be paralyzed or to have your memory completely erased of all magic?" Fred asked him in a very angry whisper. George was standing behind Fred now with his wand out just in case. McGonagall had reached them.
"FRED WEASLY! PUT YOUR WAND DOWN THIS INSTANT!" She yelled in a shrill voice. She seemed even louder now that the entire Great Hall had fallen silent listening to the fight.
Fred lowered his wand and released Malfoy's shoulder. McGonagall grabbed both boys by the ears as she dragged them away to her office. The room then erupted in conversation. Everyone was guaranteed to be talking about the same thing. I looked at Avery but she didn't look at me. She was watching the boys being dragged away. Very discreetly she whispered a spell and pointed her wand their way. Malfoy's trousers fell down to just below his butt, revealing neon green underwear. A lot of people noticed and laughed. Avery just quietly giggled and pretended she didn't do it.
