The Mermaid Tale "If I Could Stand"

Unexpected

New day. New hour. New me.

I rise out of bed slowly. I was trying to avoid the headache that had been slowly building up overnight. I had to think about what happened between me and Alessandro. No matter what I did, he is forever stuck in my heart. For now, I needed to get him off my mind. I hate to admit it, but Andrina was right.
   I get ready for the day and go downstairs to see if Andrina was awake, and to my surprise she wasn't. Instead, she was on the couch naked with a man. The only thing that stopped me from screaming was that there was a blanket covering them.

"Andrina wake up..."

Her head pops up and she jumps from the bed. I released my breath once I saw her in a bra with shorts.

"What are you doing?" I ask surprisingly.

"I'm...I'm...so-sorry..ugh"

She shakes the man and he opens his eyes. I scanned the table and caught the eye of beer bottles and champagne glasses. I suppose the two got a little carried away last night.

"Sean wake your ass up!" She yells.

He finally sits up and his eyes meet mine.

"Is this your daughter or something?"

"My niece...."

I smirk.

"You gotta leave."

"Woah..woah...woman! You're just gonna kick me out? You know I have nowhere else to go right now."

"Is he a merman or something?" I ask quickly.

Andrina's eyes snap at mine and I take that as a no.

"What? A merman?" He asks.

"Just leave Sean. She was just being silly."

"I'll see you this evening?" He whispers to her.

"Yeah whatever, go now."

He puts on his clothes and leaves the house. Andrina just stands there for a couple moments before speaking.

"Sorry, you shouldn't have seen that."

"What does it feel like?"

"What does what feel like?"

"Sex." I say simply.

She tries not to smile. She lights a cigarette and takes a couple drags.

"Don't ever do it unless you love that person. It's supposed to be special. Also, you're too young to even be doing it so shush!"

I smile and walk over next to her. I wrap my arms around her and lay my head on her shoulder.

"Thank you, Andrina for helping me get through my struggles..." I say softly.

"Anything for a fellow mermaid sister."

We laugh. I felt better today. Even though times had been rough I knew Andrina would forever love me like a daughter.

I rode my bike through every red light. People watched as my bell jingled and wheels rolled. I was on my way to the carnival. That is what many of the human people called it. It had an enormous ball in the sky that would go around in circles. They also rode these still horses around and around. I wanted to understand what it was.

"Nice bike." Someone says as I park my lame automobile.

"Thank you."

"Where ya from?"

I turn around me see a girl with short silky black hair and big green eyes staring at me with wonder. She was dressed in overalls with white sneakers.
