Yuri tried to swallow the lump that had lodged itself in his throat, but it was too big.

His heart continued to pound against his chest and he bit the side of his lip as he looked down at the bed. He was unable to look at Viktor, as he waited for him to continue.

"I have a type of leukemia that got triggered somehow when I was around your age. It's rare for someone that age to get it and it's almost unheard of. It keeps receding and they can't seem to get rid of it. It stopped acting up a couple of years ago and the doctors thought it was gone for good." The older male fell silent to let his words sink in.

Yuri felt as if he was in some kind of dream that he couldn't get out of.

"You're probably wondering why I was still able to skate. It never got bad enough for me to be hospitalized, but I did go and get treatments once a year. It seemed to respond to the treatments and that's why the doctors thought--" "Stop." Yuri got up and stepped away from the bed.

"Why the hell didn't you tell me about this?" "I figured that there was no need in telling you. whether I like it or not, this is my reality and there's nothing I can do about it. There's no point in groveling about something you can't change. You only live once and I wanted to fulfill my dreams." "Were you even able to do that?" "I was. I had an amazing skating career and I met you, plus so many other amazing people."

Yuri shook his head, not able to wrap his head around this at all. "I can't believe that this had to happen in order for me to find out. What if this had never happened? Were you still planning on not telling me?" He seen the other look away and it was all the answer he needed. His heart shattered into a million pieces and he felt nothing but grief.

"Yuri, come here..." The younger male shook his head and turned away from the other's view. He choked back a sob and felt tears start to pour down his cheeks. He didn't want to lose Viktor. Not when he had only pretty much just entered into his life.

Was this the penalty of being happy? Were you destined to be punished if you were happy?

Hearing movement behind himself, Yuri sniffled and glanced back, seeing Viktor start to get out of the bed. "N-no! I don't think you're supposed to be getting up." He rushed over to the other's side and frowned. "Please, get back in bed..."

Yuri sighed, feeling a bit relieved when Viktor got back into the bed. "It's cold, so make sure you cover up." "You're sounding like my mother now..." "Well, you've always taken care of me, so now it's my turn." The ravenette blushed a bit and sat back on the bed.

"I'm sorry, Yuri..." Viktor looked over at the younger male and put his head down.

Yuri was quiet for awhile and then glanced over at the other male. He should have put himself in his shoes. It must have been difficult to go through such a horrible experience and he wondered if he had anyone by his side at the time it happened.

Reaching out, he poked the top of Viktor's head and then pat the place that he had poked. It was something that he did to console the other male before competitions sometimes.

He smiled softly and looked into Viktor's eyes when he raised his head. "There's no need to apologize. I should be the one apologizing. I shouldn't be stressing you out when you're like this."

Yuri shook his head after a moment and then reached out, taking Viktor's hands in his own, intertwining their fingers together. "I'm not going anywhere. I'll stay by your side until all of this is over."

They always usually talked non stop when they were together, but tonight was different.
