Chapter Two

As I was walking home I could feel someone's eyes on me, watching me.  My heels scraped against the dirt road.  I pulled my hair into a sloppy bun as I walked, desperate to find relief from the sweltering heat of the south.  Behind me, I could hear the slight whisper of someone calling my name.  I turned to see an empty road.

"Hello?"  I called out into the emptiness.  "Is someone there?"

Don't be paranoid.  I reminded myself.  There is no one here.

I turned around and began walking, silently cursing myself for selling my car.  Then again, I did sell the car so I could fix the air conditioning my house, so maybe it wasn't such a bad thing.

"Lilly."

The strange voice whispered so close to my ear.  It was like a hiss, high-pitched, threatening.  Chills raced up my back and the sweat that clung to my back became ice cold.  Invisible fingers trailed the flesh on my arm.  I rubbed my hand across the area but the feeling didn't stop.

"Lilly," a male voice spoke harshly, as if he had been trying to get my attention for a while.

I turned my head to see Ace in a shiny black 2013 Ford Mustang GT.  My eyes instantly grew wide as I thought about my red, sweaty, face and frizzed hair.  A smile grew on his face as if he had heard my thoughts.

"Would you like a ride?"  He asked.

Yes!  Yes!  My brain screamed.

"I don't know you," I found myself saying.

What was wrong with me?  This gorgeous man was offering me a ride in his incredibly nice car.  Who cares if I don't know him?  I sure as hell don't.

For some reason, he didn't seem upset by my response.  Instead, he flashed his pearly whites and looked proud.

"Are you kidding?"  He asked.  I stood there with my arms crossed as he looked at me, waiting for me to get in his car.  After a while he sighed.  "Okay, my name is Ace.  I like my coffee black and long walks on the beach.  I have a sensitive side that I don't like to show and I am not planning on kidnapping you so I can make a mask with your skin," he said with a slight smile.  "Good enough?"

I rolled my eyes and walked around to the other side of his car.  I opened the door and sat down, immediately I was hit in the face with a blast of cold air.  The car started moving and I found myself drinking in the aroma that was filling the car.  He smelled like sheer pheromones.

"What are you doing here?"  I asked, the casualty of my tone surprising me.

"Driving you to your house, which you should probably be telling me how to get to," he said.

"Take a left up here.  It's going to be a really narrow path," I informed him.

It dawned on me that perhaps I shouldn't be telling a stranger how to get to my house, but for some reason I wasn't alarmed.  Being around Ace was like being made into something stronger, something invincible.  He made me feel like I didn't care about anything, like could hurt me and nothing could touch me.

"I meant, what are you doing in this town?"  I clarified.

"Looking for you,” he answered sarcastically, shooting me a small smile.  I rolled my eyes.

"Alright Rico Suave, wanna tell me the truth now?"  I asked.

How was I acting so casual?  We were speaking as if we had known each other forever.  This man was a complete stranger to me but I somehow I felt a hundred percent comfortable.
