Chapter Nine

His expression was serious.  I sat there frozen, not knowing what to do or say.  I glanced around the room waiting for someone to jump out and tell me it was all a joke.

But how did he show me him and the girl?  My mind searched for a possible explanation.  Hypnosis maybe, yeah, that had to be it.

A smile rose to Sam’s lips.  “It’s not hypnosis, Lilly,” he said with a glimmer of pride in his eyes.

            “How did you-“

“I’m an angel, Lilly,” he repeated.  “I projected the image into your mind.”

“Oh, you projected the image into my mind.  Great, that makes perfect sense,” I bit back sarcastically.  Sam gave a small laugh and I found myself having to fight a smile.

“Think about it, Lil.  Does it really seem all that strange to you?”  He asked.

“Let’s see, stranger shows up twice in one week, the first time beating on a window and the second time at my house, stranger knows my name and says we’ve met before yet I know nothing about him, stranger shows me a weird movie thing and then says he beamed it into my mind because he’s a fucking angel.  Yeah, I’d say it’s all a little strange.”

“One, sorry about scaring you in the car, but like I said, Ace is dangerous and it’s not good for you to be around him.  Two,” he continued ticking off the number two with his fingers.  “We have met before, in other lifetimes.  That girl in the “movie thing” was you in our first lifetime.  Three, I didn’t beam it, I projected it.”  I rolled my eyes at the third one.  “Four,” he continued oblivious to my eye roll.  “It’s probably not a good idea to swear and then say something holy like, oh I don’t know, angel,” he finished with a smirk.

“Look, Sam,” I said sweetly, leaning forward and putting my hand over his.  “Mental sickness is not something to be ashamed of.  You can’t help it that you’re different.”  Sam yanked his hand from under mine and instead laced our fingers together.  Warm tingles spread up my arm gradually until they reached my heart, causing it to beat faster.  He gave my hand a small squeeze and passed a reassuring glance.

“Your name was Lilith back then,” he started explaining.  “That guy in the beginning, the one you ran from, that was Adam, your mate.”

“Adam,” I said, the name felt foreign on my tongue and by the look on Sam’s face he didn’t like the way I said it either.  My eyes were locked on Sam’s and all I could feel was this overwhelming sense of calm.

“When you ran, God sent me and two other angels to bring you back,” Sam continued.

“But you didn’t bring me back,” I said and quickly noticed my mistake.  I said “me” instead of “her”.  I was actually starting to go along with the whole story.

“No, when I saw you, all I wanted was to protect you.  You weren’t happy with Adam, he was controlling and you were defiant.”

“You killed them,” I whispered referring to the other angels.  He nodded, not bothering to feel ashamed.

“We were punished for our rebellion.”

            “The baby died,” I continued.

“We couldn’t have a son and any child that would survive would be a demon,” Sam explained.  “You were heartbroken.”
