Chapter Thirty-Three
“The shadows aren’t killing succubuses!” I yelled as I burst through the front door of my home.
Ace’s head snapped up from the table and Sam ran from the hall to see what was wrong.
“For fuck’s sake, Lilly!” Ace yelled. “You can’t come bursting in, we thought something was wrong.”
“Something is wrong. We were wrong,” I breathed out quickly. “I went to a church and the pastor there was telling me how that Nicole girl—you know the one who killed herself in Blackbeard’s Park—she used to go to that church.”
“And unholy creatures can’t step on holy ground,” Sam finished for me.
“Well that’s great, Lilly,” Ace said sarcastically. “You’ve destroyed our only hypothesis.”
“You went to a church?” Sam asked with a smile.
I shrugged like it was no big deal. “Yeah, it was fine.”
“That’s great,” he said encouragingly. “How’d it go?”
“It was like when we went to the Tree, I was so calm and—“
“Have you two forgotten that there is still something out there that obviously wants Lilly dead?” Ace snapped.
“Well what do you want to do about it, Ace?” I yelled. I was growing sick of his attitude.
“Anything!” He roared back, getting up from his seat at the table so he could be closer to me. “Anything is better than sitting here and chatting about church.”
“There’s nothing we can do,” I argued. “We’ve run out of options.”
“How do you know?” Ace mocked. “You’ve given up.”
“I have not”—I shouted—“given up!” He stepped closer so only a foot or so was between us.
“Yes.” His voice was hard. His eyes were burning. “You have.”
“You’re right, Ace. You’re so right,” I spat sarcastically. “I want whatever this thing is to kill me.”
“I do too,” he yelled, “and I hope it takes you right up to Heaven. And I hope you sit up there on a perfect, fucking cloud and you finally realize that even Heaven is Hell without me. I hope you live out the rest of eternity miserably happy with Angel Boy because that’s what you fucking deserve!”
“And I hope you burn in Hell you egotistical asshole!” I countered.
