Chapter Seven

I woke up on the floor of my living room to a loud banging on my door.  I groaned and peeled my sweaty flesh off the hardwood floor.  My joints popped and my muscles screamed in protest as I reached for the doorknob.

Ace’s bright blue eyes filled my vision.  My jaw dropped in surprise but a moment later, my face shifted to complete mortification as I realized what I was wearing.  Ace didn’t seem to mind.  He moved around me and stepped into my living room without an invitation.  I made a face and turned around.  Ace’s eyes moved up and down my bare legs.  Suddenly, I wished my shorts were just a little bit longer and my tank top didn’t cling so close to my body.  I crossed my arms awkwardly over my chest hoping to cover myself a little more.  Ace’s eyes continued to travel up and down my body.  I cleared my throat, but Ace wasn’t fazed.  His eyes roamed my body until he hummed and nodded appreciatively.

            “Get dressed,” he commanded.

            “Why?”  I asked.

            “We’re going somewhere.”

“Where?”  I pressed.  His face twisted to one of annoyance.

“Just get dressed.”  His tone told me he was done talking.

I rolled my eyes and walked towards my room.  I slid into my bathroom and turned the shower on.  What made him think he could just walk into my home and boss me around?  I huffed, suddenly fuming by his boldness.  He didn’t have to stand there and gawk at me either.  How humiliating.    I mumbled under my breath as I ducked under the water.  The warm stream created a dense fog that collected on the shower door.   I forced myself not to think about my dream.

My dreams were getting more and more vivid lately.  I had never really had many nightmares, even as a kid.  Now all of a sudden, they were becoming a common occurrence and quite frankly, they freaked the shit out of me.  Honestly, who dreams about their reflection like that?  I shook the thoughts away as I rinsed the conditioner out of my hair.

After I practically forced myself out of the shower, I padded into my room and tied my hair up in a sloppy bun.  I dressed quickly, not wanting to keep Ace waiting any longer.  Not that it mattered.

I emerged a few minutes later to find Ace sitting on my couch, looking infuriated.  His stormy blue eyes connected with my brown ones.  He stood up and walked out the door without saying anything.  I rolled my eyes at his attitude and followed him out the door, making sure to lock the door behind me.

I climbed in his car, enjoying being wrapped in his scent.  Goodness, that man smelled terrific.  He tore out of the driveway and sped down the road.  My hand immediately flew to the handle above the door.

            “Ace!”  I yelled in surprise.

His eyes flashed over to mine quickly.  His once dark blue eyes were now all black, like the pupil had consumed the iris.  My eyes grew wide and a warm feeling spread throughout me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”  His voice was a low rumble.  It was like some guttural growl that would normally escape a wild animal, not an ordinary man.  My heart beat sped up but my breathing became soft and slow.  Only when his eyes pulled from mine was I able to realize what he had asked.

“Tell you what?”  I asked, my voice was a soft whisper.  I had to strain to hear it myself, but Ace flinched as if I had yelled.
