We arrived at the hospital after an almost awkward car ride. Tyler didn't know what to say after that, and neither did I. We walked in and waited for my name to be called before we finally entered the room.
The nurse told me that it would be a few minutes until the doctor would be there.
"Sam..." He began, but he almost seemed like he didn't know how to finish. Jacob was a touchy subject with me, he has been my best friend basically my entire life. Now that it's the time that I need him the most, he isn't here for me. It really saddens me that I won't be able to share the excitement of finding out the gender of my babies with him. I have imagined this day so many times before, yet I know that my experience will be nothing like I had ever dreamed."I'm not letting him ruin my day, I just want to focus on this today," I said placing a hand on my bulging stomach. Tyler nodded and the doctor entered the room.
"Hello, how are you doing?" The doctor said sitting down on his rolling chair and flipped through a clipboard. I responded respectfully.
"I am Dr. McAdams, I will be the one delivering your babies when the time comes," he shook Tyler's hand and then mine. He set the clipboard down and started talking to us again.
"I understand that this may be silly to talk about so soon, but at nearly nineteen weeks, you can never predict how a pregnancy will turn out. This is a vital part to this stage in pregnancy. You could go into labor tomorrow for all we know," he joked. Just the thought of delivering them tomorrow sent panic to flood my veins.
"I tend to start talking to the mothers and fathers-to-be around the time that the gender is revealed, with that being said, are you ready to see your babies today?" He smiled. I like this guy. He's very cheery and light hearted.
"Yes sir," I said. He nodded and quickly started to prep for an ultrasound. Tyler and I sat patiently as he began, I lifted my shirt up as he squirted the gel onto my stomach.
"I do quite a bit of things here, I deliver babies, do ultrasounds, and even perform cesareans, but looking at these healthy little ones, I don't believe you have to worry about that," he said as he roamed over my stomach, analyzing the grainy print on the screen.
"Here is the head of Baby A," he panned to a small circle. You could just make out facial features. Eyes, mouth, nose, even little ears. He shifted positions just as we were marveling the chubby little cheeks.
"And then Baby B," he showed another circle almost identical to the other.
"Since they share the same amniotic sac, they are indeed identical twins," he said. I could see Tyler smiling from the corner of my eye. All I could think about was my dream. They looked exactly the same, but their hair and eye color were completely different.
"Is it possible for identical twins to have different hair and eye color?" I asked.
"Yes, but it is very unlikely," he said. He went over some more body parts with us, explaining that this far along in the pregnancy should do what to the baby and where we should be at by the next appointment. The only thing running through my mind was pink or blue.
"Now, are you ready to find out the genders?" Dr. McAdams turned to us and asked. Tyler and I looked at each other, I could see the excitement sparkle in his eyes.
"Yes sir," Tyler said it this time. Dr. McAdams nodded and went down towards Baby A's private region.
"Alright, this is Baby A right here, and-ah, here we are." I looked at the screen, one look and I felt like crying. In fact I thought I might start, but the doctor said another thing.
