"Can I borrow five dollars?" I asked Austin as I swung his hand in mine. My eyes had just scanned the nearest Starbucks and I suddenly had a craving for a Refresher.
"What for?" Austin replied, though he probably knew the answer. I shot him a playful glare as he laughed, reaching into his back pocket for his wallet. He handed me the crisp dollar bill as I gave him a grin.
"I love you." I smiled as I quickly kissed him on the lips. We walked into the coffee shop and I made my way towards the cashier.
"What can I get for you?" The boy asked, smiling widely. He looked about my age, possibly a little older. But he was cute. Pretend you didn't read that.
"A grande Cool Lime Refresher please." I stated as he grabbed the cup and began writing on it.
"My favorite." He chuckled, capping his pen and tapping the screen in front of him to type in my order. "That will be 3.65."
I handed him the five dollars and immediately felt someone grip onto my hand. I turned my head slightly to see Austin very close behind me, resting his chin on my shoulder. Shaking my head, I let out a quiet laugh before being given my change.
It didn't take long for my drink to be ready and I happily drank it while we walked out of the shop. Austin's hand never left mine and it felt awkward because every time I'd try to let go, he wouldn't let me. It was as if he suddenly tuned into his overprotective mode. I tried to pretend like I didn't notice but it was pretty obvious.
We passed a group of six people and the boys in the group whistled at me while I walked by. I tried to ignore them because I could tell Austin was getting agitated. I just continued to walk faster, dragging Austin with me.
We walked around town for a while until I landed my eyes on the cutest dress I have ever seen. I shuffled into the store with Austin not far behind me. As soon as I reached the dress I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It was a short body con dress that was simple but there was something about it that drew my attention towards it. I went to the dressing room and tried it on, stepping outside afterwards to show Austin. He didn't seem to have any emotion when he saw me.
"What do you think?" I grinned happily.
Austin shook his head quickly. "Too much cleavage."
"Are you kidding? You love when I wear these kinds of dresses." I furrowed my eyebrows at him, crossing my arms in the process.
"I just think it shows too much of your body." Austin added disapprovingly.
"Who are you, my dad?" I retorted as I stomped back into the dressing room. I took a look in the mirror and stared for a while.
I'm still getting the dress.
After taking it off and exiting the dressing rooms, I continued moseying through the store. I picked up some tops I liked but I couldn't help but notice how uptight Austin was being about my clothing choices. I just don't get it, he usually would be drooling over me if I wore anything like a tight dress or a short top. But not today.
"Austin, are you okay?" I asked as he was in the middle of fixing his shirt in the mirror.
He turned to me and acted as if everything was fine. "Yeah, can't a guy fix his shirt in a mirror?" He joked.
As I turned around, I noticed a group of boys staring at me. They looked away immediately as they noticed me looking at them. I sent them a suspicious look and continued to shop.
I had paid for my clothes and was now walking out of the shop with my few bags. Austin was trailing behind me slowly and he seemed to lag a lot. I had to stop every so often to wait for him.
"Where are we off to now?" I asked as we got into his car. He barely shrugged before starting the car and driving off. It was a silent ride and it wasn't good. Austin rarely made eye contact with me let alone tried to start up a conversation. I wanted to say something but I didn't know what to say.
We pulled up to the front of my house quicker than I expected. We planned to spend the rest of our day at home earlier. That is, when he was actually talking to me. Right now, I don't know what's going on in his head.
It's was very silent for a long moment after Austin had parked the car in the driveway. We sat there, neither of us getting out of the car before the other.
"Do we need to talk?" I asked, turning my head to face him.
He bit his lip, shutting his eyes tightly. He heaved a sigh afterwards as he opened his eyes but kept his gaze forward.
"I can't do this."
Oh no, he was not... No. I'm not going to let him slip away again.
"I think we need to take a break." He added.
I swallowed hard and tried to keep my composure. It wasn't working very well because I felt like bawling my eyes out. Call me a wimp. I just don't get it. What did I do wrong?
"You should go." He said in almost a whisper.
For some reason, I felt anger boiling inside me and my hands balled up into fists rather quickly. "Could you at least explain to me why?" I nearly spat at him.
"I see the way other guys look at you. I hate that. Do you know how it feels to have other guys hitting on your girlfriend?" He said angrily, almost punching the horn on the wheel.
"What does that have to do with anything?" I replied.
"Because I know all those other guys have a better chance of stealing you from me. I hate it when we go out together, it happens all the time." Austin yelled.
I looked at Austin and touched his hand, his head snapping towards me.
"You should know by now that I wouldn't want anyone else in the world but you." I said calmly. He sighed loudly, running his hand through his hair.
It was once again silent, until Austin turned towards me.
"Why do you always make me feel like an idiot?" He grinned, pressing his lips against mine.
"Because you're my idiot."
