~Mare~
"Marry me".
This must be a trick. He's baiting me for some kind of evil scheme.
What I do next happens involuntarily. I shut the ring box. Maven appears dumbfounded, completely in disbelief. " How do I know there's no silent stone laced in the ring?", I fold my arms. Maven removes the ring, placing it on his pinky. It barely fits him.
He ignited small flames out of mid-air , orange and red illuminated his strong features. His eyes shine brighter in light of his fire. Almost appearing clear. "I'd never allow you to be poisoned my dear, only the best for my future bride" he assures. Is this a step I can take? Can I marry Maven?
A million thoughts going a thousand miles per hour. What will my family think, how will the guard react, what about Cal?.
My heart, the part of me still yearns for him, wants to accept. And then there's my head, screaming at me to kill him. Strike him dead right here right now. Why not Mare? You've killed before, what's one more?"I don't know what to say".
Maven puts the ring back into the box, returning the box to his pocket.
"I expected that", he tangles his hand in my hair, "you're unsure of me and my intentions". " Tell you what, come back with me - I'll let you observe me in my habitat. Take notes on me, do whatever you need to, just let me show you that I can be your Maven", he gleamed.
I watch him saunter back to his rowboat, climbing back into it. Once settled he looks up at me, extending his hand.
" One more chance?".
Are you willing to bet your life on this?
" If I go with you I want something in return" I state.
Maven nods.
" I want you to promise to let Cal live. Peacefully in exile, away from harm".
His expression hardened into a glower, burn marks started to develop along the ore handles where his palm was resting.
" My family as well. And I want to be able to visit at least twice a month - no sentinels and no Silvers" I finish.
Maven forces a smile, "will that be all?".
I can't help but smirk.
Mavens smile nearly broke his face, it was so big and cheesy. At this moment he reminds me of a child getting their big Christmas gift. Giddy, smiley and unable to sit still. I'll be his present as long as he promises to keep my loved ones safe.
"So that's a yes?", he needed to hear the words.
I nodded.
" We can do this Mare, we can rule together," Maven's starting to get excited, "We'll have a wedding, someday we'll have beautiful children and we'll grow old together".
He grabbed my hand, pulling me on top of him.
"The world is our's," he says.
My mind keeps traveling to Elara. The present queen, the mother of my future husband. She hated me when I was a palace maid, she loathed me when I was Mareena and now, she antagonizes me with murderous rage.
She won't be pleased to see me, let alone me returning as Maven's fiancé. She'll come after me, or Evangeline will. Either way, I'm screwed. The whisper queen and the magnetron, two deadly beings teamed up against me.
It's easy to slip into fear when you're constantly on the run form it. Such an exhausting life, running and hiding. No peace can be found this way. Maybe this is why I accepted his proposal, I'm tired of running and I want to rest." If you hurt me one more time, I swear on my life I will kill you. Even if I have to die to do it" I say coldly, voice oddly serious.
Maven doesn't get angry. He doesn't even acknowledge that I threatened him.
"Duly noted".
