A whirlwind of fire sashays through the air. I watch as Evangeline is engulfed in my flames, I hear her hideous screeching. Quickly I elbow her out of my way, not caring when her head bounces off the floor. I knelt down at Mare's side, she's twitching, breathing sharply.
Her eyes, once so brown, so innocent, so childlike. Now were fading away. Her skin pales, almost paler than me. She's dying.

"Someone get me a skin healer!" I ordered.

Guards run in every direction, they move as fast as humanly possible. Within minutes they've found me a healer, she stops at Evangeline's charred body.

"Leave her", I point down at Mare, "this one".

She kneels down on the other side, Mare's blood stains her clothes. She looked disgusted by the sight of her. Eyes crinkling into a glare, nose scrunched up as if Mare bleeding on her was somehow disrespectful. I shoot her a warning look, she quickly goes to work.

I grab ahold of Mare's hand, with my other hand I stroke her hair. She stares up at me, almost shocked by my tenderness.

"Hold on to me" I beg, "just hold on".

"Sire, the wound is too deep" the healer informs.

Don't say it

"I'm sorry but- she's too far gone".

Her words are like a kick in the face.

She tried to take Mare, she pulls her out of my grasp. I feel like my heart has just been ripped, torn apart. She's literally removing a piece of my heart.

I've already had to lose her once. I can not do it again, my heart couldn't take it. She's mine, she's my heart and I will not lose her again.

I ripped Mare away from the healer, protectively cradling her blood-splattered body in my arms. "No," I say firmly.

I'll save you, I will always save you
