Knowing her brother's ardent love for Palani Dhandayuthapani, Arumuganar's sister Veeralakshmi ammal, became eager to visit Palani murugan. Arumuganar could not convince his sister about the dangers in travelling to palani on those days with poor transportation facilities, dangerous forests and rivers. She pestered him to take her with him on Thaipoosam day to Palani. On a Thaipoosam day, the whole village people sent off the brother and sister to Palani. As his sister was accompanying him, Arumuganar who hoped with his Kavadi in about three hours to Palani, was unable to travel in that speed. So it took some more time to reach Palani.
The Palani temple authorities waited for a long time for Arumuganar's Kavadi to arrive, but finally offered Pooja to Lord Dhandayuthapaani and closed the temple. Arriving late, Arumuganar found his favourite Lord Dhandayuthapaani's temple closed. Unable to have the dharshan of Lord Dhandayuthapaani, Aarumuganar cried to the Lord, " I have been contemplating on you all the time, to have your Dharshan on this Thaipoosam day. I have been waiting all over the year for this day. I was anxious to sing your glories in front of you. But lo! Your temple in closed and I could not sing in front of you. My tongue has failed to serve the purpose for which it is intended to. I don't need my tongue anymore which doesn't sing the attributes of my Lord", saying this he cut off his tongue.
Deeply moved by his ardent devotee's faith, Lord Murugan appeared before Aarumuganar and called him, "Aarumugath thambirane!", The Lord pacified him and said, "It's my wish to give you my darshan that which caused you a delay to arrive here." Aarumuganar's tongue got back to the normal state. Then Lord Murugan said to him to build a temple in his hometown Thiruthangal and worship him there all throughout the year and not to come over to Palani. Aarumuganar now titled as ARUMUGATH THAMBIRAN thought that he had not that much of money to build the temple. He then heard Lord Murugan saying, "Return home. You will find a way".AARUMUGANAR AND HIS SISTER
