We talked for awhile longer. For once I felt normal, something that I had not felt in a long while. Even when I was with Nate, living day to day as if that had always been my life, I never felt like I belonged somewhere like this.
The only other time I think I ever fully did feel like I belonged somewhere was my high school marching band, and even people there would say things that made me pause and wonder if I was really in the right place.
At some point last night, Mateo moved to sit next to me. And at some point last night, I drifted into a deep sleep.
So waking up this morning, I'm finding myself with my head resting on Mateo's shoulder s he talked to Sombra.
"You've really taken a liking to her." Sombra said and I heard him sigh.
"And you find that strange because?" He went as he shifted his head slightly, probably to look at Sombra.
"Well the last girl you were with was, how did you put it..." She said something in Spanish that my little understanding of Spanish would have me translate it to be something along the lines of a smoldering blond woman taller than the mountains...
Good god I never thought I would have to translate anything like that.
"Yeah..." He said, his voice rising in pitch, "But that doesn't mean anything."
"Mateo if I remembered correctly you wanted to marry that girl because of her looks. Now here we have Vivian Braddock curled up in your arms." Sombra said with a slight chuckle. "She's more steel than flesh. I'll give it to her that she'll always have a very fit form but she doesn't have the looks of that other woman. Just take a look at her face Mateo!"
"What about it?" He said as I felt him move a few strands of hair out of my face. Good thing my eyes are closed.
"Half of it is scarred! She's got a cybernetic eye! What on this planet had you risking your life for hers? If she wasn't working with me and they found out you let her go-"
"Look Sombra I get it! You find this strange. Or is there something else?"
"Something else?" She said with a huff. "What are you-" She stopped mid sentence. "I'll forget you even had that thought if you tell me what about her you're so attracted to."
I stirred slightly in Mateo's arms, ending the conversation. I think I've heard enough.
"Buenos dias, Vivian." Mateo said as I moved my head to look at him. His goofy grin changed to a confused frown. "What?"
"Why..." I looked at his arms and then back to him. "Well I guess just why will have to do."
"What?"
"Forget it." I said as I moved his arms off me. "Sombra does Nate know that-"
I started to ask her about Nate as I was trying to get Mateo's other arm from around my shoulder, when the door slammed open.
"Where is she, Sombra?" Nate said as he burst through the door, grabbing her by the collar of her shirt.
"Nate calm down!" I said as I swiftly got up and tried to pull him off of Sombra. "I'm right here!"
He dropped her and quickly wrapped his arms around me, squeezing me more than I care for. "Thank god you're okay." He said before taking my head in his hands and pulling me in for a kiss.
I froze in his embrace, not sure what to do. Out of the corner of my vision, I saw Mateo stand up and leave. He seemed upset.
Of course he is you idiot! You heard their conversation...
