It seemed like only a second before I opened my eyes again.
The place I'm in... I haven't been here in years.
"So this is the place you feel the safest." I hear Nate say and I turned to see him leaning against a tree. "I always wondered."
"How-"
"You're not really here." He cut in as I reached up to rub my face. I froze when I saw my hand. My human hand. "It's almost like a dream... Only we're very much talking to each other."
I gave him a confused look and he sighed. "You're trying to take over my programing right now... This is just where your mind has put you and I knew it would the case. We have a lot to talk about Vivian."
"I haven't looked like this in ages." I said as I walked back him and sat on a rock that overlooked a clear valley. "I haven't been her in years..." My voice cracked slightly.
"You've missed you're old life." He said as he sat down next to me.
"Of course I have!" I snapped at him as I looked at my hands. "My life has been chaos since you dragged my exploded ass out of this place."
"There have been up sides." He said and I sighed.
"You seem to think our toxic relationship has an up side."
"We had out moments." He said as he tried to take my hand. I just moved it away and glanced to the side.
"Why can't you just leave me alone for once? This is the first time I've ever felt..." My voice trailed off as I tried to find a word.
"Normal. Vivian you life is not normal anymore. The moment you put on that helmet and started to flash in out of the criminal world your life wasn't normal." He said and I looked over at him. "I thought you were at peace with what you are."
"I was... Then you started to treat me like I was a machine that could be changed as needed." I said and I could see the guilty look on his face.
"What choice did I have?" He said as he looked ahead of us. "Talon would have killed me and anyone I was close to. And once they got their hands on you-"
"My family is already dead." I said with a sigh. "They died trying to find me. Did you know that about a year after you saved me, I saw that they were still looking for me? Right then and there I looked for a plane ticket home. Before I bought it, I thought about everything that happened."
I swallowed. "Only one thing kept me from buying that ticket. You were the only reason I stayed."
"I..." His voice trailed off. "I didn't know."
"I put that helmet on all those years ago to get away from my family. I wanted to feel like I mattered. Before I came across the guy that told me about the bomb, I was torn." I took a deep breath. "My life was falling apart around me and I wanted it to end. I was thinking about running off and leaving it behind me. Then I heard about the bomb."
"You knew you weren't going to make it?" He sounded a bit surprised. "I thought you were just too full of yourself to not try to save the day."
"My life ended that day. All of the horrible things my family did, all of the people at school... Never again did I have to seem them. Yet part of me always wondered what happened to them." My eyes closed. "You never told me why you saved me..."
"I had heard about you around the time I was finishing my research. It followed Angela Zingler's quiet closely and I wondered if I could modify a human." He paused for a second. "I went to America to find someone that didn't care about laws and regulations. I never had a target but when the building exploded just a block away from where I was, I though someone was bond to be there for me to... Borrow."
