I avoided Hector for the remaining week, and he seemed to dejectedly leave me alone. I wondered if he had laughed off what I said in defensive anxiety. He seemed to long for my attention constantly, and I could tell he was becoming depressed with my ignoring him. What was worse, he was taking it out on others- and no one but me knew why.
It was with Terrin that he finally snapped- ruining what little chance there was to reunite their friendship. They heatedly arguing over something that I wasn’t following, for I was too busy trying to listen for the familiar, female voice.
“Terrin—“ Joanna’s worried voice already tried to separate them.
Terrin’s roar at Hector drowned her out- breaking my concentration. I could’ve sworn I just heard her. That busty female . . . .
“— the other night.” The girl had said.
I scrunched in concentration over my friends’ racket.
“It was perfect!” her voice was faint, but I could barely make it out. “She totally looks guilty now of wit—“
Terrin stood, slamming his fists on the table. Hector met his fierceness by copying his actions.
“You bastard!” He snarled.
“Pardon me, your highness!” Hector snapped. “If you kept your nose—“
Damnit they were blocking out her sound!
“Both of you shut up!” I commanded, growling angrily.
They ignored me- and I lost all traces of what the girl was saying. I was sure it was her! I caught the very end of her sentence in-between Hector and Terrin’s syllables.
“— I can’t believe my own craftiness.”
I wish I could turn to see who was talking- but it’d be to plainly obvious.
“Evelyn, what is wrong?” Gwin calmly asked, giving up long ago on separating Hector and Terrin.
“Boys, please.” Joanna pleaded. “Terrin, if you’d—“
“Joanna, please just stay out!” he snapped at her. She drew back at his malice.
I was a bit shocked myself, and my anger was subdued and replaced with what was happening. I had never heard Terrin speak in such a way towards Joanna.
“Terrin!” Gwin chided. “You shouldn’t speak to your wife out of anger—“
“I swear one day I’ll kill you, you brute!” Hector snarled at Terrin.
Terrin’s attention was taken from Gwin back to Hector.
“Hector!” I yelled, attracting mass attention from the various people in the hall, and getting them to shutup for at least a few seconds. I was tired of their bickering.
He stared at me expectantly- it was the first I had spoken to him since the night I had taken Joanna’s place. The girl hadn’t vandalized Joanna or her room since.
“You idiots!” I hissed in a whisper, so only my table could hear. “I could’ve sworn I heard the girl talking! Now you’ve both gone and ruined it!”
Joanna’s eyes brightened.
Terrin spoke softly to me. “Blame Hector, he—“
“Don’t start you stupid—“ Hector began.
“Hector-“ I warned. “Can it.”
“Listen more,” Gwin instructed. “See if you hear her again.”
