Christmas dinner was awkward to say the least. Mother Earth was glaring at Dante the entire time, but was avoiding my gaze altogether. David looked rigid the whole time, like he was on his guard. Henry, Emily, and Christy, on the other hand, were too festive, as if to make up for the lack of enthusiasm in the air. The scene as a whole did not go together. You would have better luck mixing water and oil. To top it all up it was painfully long.

Now we’re all gathered in the living room opening Christmas gifts in the still awkward atmosphere. Dante was like my shadow the whole time. He wouldn’t leave my side for anything. When I finally decided I had enough, I pulled him away from prying ears. We ended up in a room that looked like a library, and let me tell you it would give the one from the beauty and the beast a run for its money.

“Dante, what’s going on?” I asked him while drilling him with my gaze.

He creases his eyebrows in confusion. “What do you mean?” He sounded sincere and looked so cute with his puzzled face and tilted head. I could see him doing that in his wolf form. No Brea, don’t let your guard down.

“Why are you stuck on me like glue? You need to back off.” My voice was firm and commanding, and I was really proud of it. Dante, however, seemed to abhor it, since he was now glowering at me.

“You-don’t-give-me-orders.” He said between gritted teeth. He moves his face closer to mine and the sparks were tangible. Not good sparks I’m afraid. It was more of a power surge pouring off him. “I’ll be the one giving orders. I am your Alpha and you will show me respect.” His tone matched his glare, both so cold it could freeze hell over. I didn’t know whether to feel fearful or hurt. Good thing for me anger takes over whenever I’m truly hurt, making fear take a back sit.

“Listen you Neanderthal man, I will show” I poke his chest with my index finger to emphasize my next words as well as push him away from me, if only a bit. “you nothing you don’t deserve, and you are not my Alpha.”

“I am the ALPHA.” His shout made me jump back, but do I back off? Nope not me, I have to go and poke the bear, or in this case, the enraged wolf.

“Oh, good for you! Do you want a prize, oh great Alpha?” Trust me I’m mentally kicking myself, but I can’t keep my lips from moving. “Perhaps we should give you a nametag that says I am the Alpha, or maybe a trophy with your name on it. Oh I know! How about one of those ribbons they give at the dog shows. After all, you are a winner Dante. Knowing you’re the alpha and all. Talk about tricks!”

His body starts shaking as his power and anger flares, but what finally shuts me up are his glowing feral eyes. I gulp down hard as I take a step back. He notices and starts pacing in front of me while never taking his feral eyes off me, very much the predator stalking his prey. I want to run, I truly do, but my body is frozen in place. Someone please help…

Touch him. That little voice in my head instructs me.

Are you insane? Wait don’t answer that, after all, I am the one talking to a voice in my head.

         I’m your inner wolf.

What? I asked the little voice in my head. I’m not sure I heard her right.

I’m not a little voice in your head. I’m your inner wolf. The voice or inner wolf sounded patient and wise, something I’m not. Perhaps I should let her take over from time to time, that way I will prevent angry alphas from stalking me.
