The 3.20pm siren sounded which meant the end of school! My first day was… well… different – not like I’d expected. All I wanted to do was give an apple to the teacher and sit up straight and tall, but instead, I got involved in a brief altercation with a schoolboy bully who tried to steal my skateboard whom I am now supposed to get into a fight with after school; met and made friends with Lisa – who is openly ‘gay’; had a vulgarly scary experience with Miss Fatigoo; couldn’t believe why Mr Gunning doesn’t use a whiteboard and marker pen instead of chalk… well actually, judging by the amount of chalk on his pants… that could be dangerous so maybe I could; made friends – or at least made alliances – with the Veronica’s – oops, I meant the Vixen Vampires; and my secret crush – not mentioning any names, but he’s named after a plane – has invited me out to the skate park after school to road test my skateboard!
Phewww! Just wait until I get home to tell mum what sort of a day… Oh, no! Mum!! I completely forgot! Mum was going to meet me somewhere out in the front car park after school to take me home! Oh, man… I have to quickly run out there now before anyone sees me! It’s against the nerd law to have your mum or dad pick you up from school – unless of course, they were called in by the principal, that is!
I was trying to remember the way out to the front of the school. I could see the exit in sight that led to the car park. I pushed my way past people, knocked them aside with my school bag. I felt like some desperate housewife at a Myer Stock take Sale… when…
‘Karris! Wait up!’ should I pretend I didn’t hear Lisa? ‘Where a‘ya going? I thought we were going to the skate park now? What about your skateboard?’
‘Oh, yeah, my skateboard… locked away in Lisa’s locker!’ I stopped running and turned around and saw Lisa waving to me in the distance near the lockers, talking on her mobile phone and beckoning me her way. I closed my eyes for a moment and let out a deep sigh, spewing that I had nearly made it to the car park – I could have run out there and run back without anyone knowing and just put it down to me getting lost. My gut instinct was telling me that I have to go out to the car park to find mum, but my head was telling me to go now with Lisa… hopefully… mum will understand why I didn’t meet her after school… after all, she is mum… and she’s the coolest, so she understands everything about teenage girls… right? Oh my God… she’s going to kill me!
‘Yeah! Be right there!’ I put on a false sense of security as I called back to Lisa, making my way over to her. Already at the lockers was Gothic Barbie with her accessories – the other two! Now I knew for sure that there was NO WAY that I could get out of this now. Oh, please understand, Mum…
As I approached Lisa, she was just hanging up from her phone call. ‘That was my Mum, she’d kill me if I didn’t tell her that I wasn’t coming straight home after school, so I just quickly told her not to expect me home until 6pm.’ She said with a relief.
Just then, I had a brilliant idea – and the most obvious one… I would ask Lisa if I could use her mobile phone so I could ring my Mum. ‘Yeah, same goes for me, especially being new and everything as well, my Mum’s a bit too precautious sometimes.’
Lisa just looked at me empathetically, then jumped with a great idea she just had. ‘You have a mobile phone, don’t you Karris?’ Lisa asked.
‘Ummm, yes I do, but I left it at home… it wasn’t charged so I didn’t bother bringing it today.’ But the truth was that I was too embarrassed to tell the truth when just about everybody here had mobile phone of their own.
