Zoe's POV
I dry myself off and step out of the dark bathroom. Turning down the hall, I catch a scent of food, making a small smile grow. I walk into the room Alfie and I slept in and grab my boots and tie them up. Down the hall, I see Hunter leave his room holding Alice's hand followed by May, who carries Garrett. I stand up and walk down the hall to join them.
"Good morning" I say, maybe a little too happily. May turns around and gives a half hearted smile.
"Morning" she says and puts Garrett down on the ground next to Alice.I sit down next to Alfie on one of the tattered couches and he wraps his arm around my shoulders.
"Food's ready" Holden says from the kitchen. Alice and Garrett are the first to run up, their little stomachs growling. I stand up and peer over the counter: eggs, toast, and beans. It could have been dirt and I would have eaten it. Rosalie hands me a plate and I thank her and sit back down. As I sit, I notice May remains seated, her elbows on her knees and her eyes fixed on her hands."May" I say. She doesn't look up.
"May do you want me to get you some food?" I ask, placing by plate down next to me. She shakes her head slowly."I'm fine Zo, thanks" she says, trying to force a smile. I stand up and walk to the kitchen and fix another plate. Everyone is busy talking to each other in there so no one notices the fact I took more. I bring it out towards May and sit down next to her.
"You have to eat something May" I say, trying my best to put sternness into my voice. She looks down and takes the plate and begins to eat slowly."Do you want to tell me what's wrong?" I ask, placing my hand on her shoulders. She slides her head down to my shoulder and shuts her eyes. I put my chin on top of her head and slowly rub her back.
"It's kinda just all hitting me today. My parents. My brother." She whispers.
"Any reason why all today?" I ask. I don't even know the date.
"It's uh...today's my birthday" she says, looking at the ground.
Hunter's POV
I notice Zoe is sitting on the couch with May and can't help but feel sad for her. This morning she was fine, and she changed when I was talking about the da-The date.
I wonder...
May stands up suddenly and walks quickly down the hall and into my room, shutting the door quietly behind her. Zoe looks at me from across the room in complete confusion and sadness. I walk into the living room and sit down on the couch with Joe and Sean. They both smile genuinely, and I can't help but notice that they seem too happy."How is everything?" Holden asks as he walks in with his plate.
"It's fantastic" Jim says, his mouth full of beans."How did you come across eggs? Surely you don't have a chicken downstairs do you?" Tanya asks, shoveling food into her mouth.
"No but we kept them in the freezer for a while. I'm honestly surprised they're edible" Rosalie says with a laugh. Everyone begins talking around me but my thoughts are on May.
My head is spinning as my thoughts run wild and everything is moving. What-
"Hunter? Are you okay?" Caspar asks. I look up and he's standing right in front of me.
"Oh-yeah I uh...I'm fine! Just a little tired" I stutter. Caspar shrugs and begins to walk away.
"Casp I'll be right back if you want my seat" I say, leaping up and walking towards the hall. Out of the corner of my eye, I watch him sit down and begin making an ass of himself. I chuckle for a second then walk to my room.Knock
Knock
Knock"May? Are you in there?" I say quietly through the door. No response. I turn the handle and open the door slowly to reveal May sitting in the window, her legs tucked close to her chest, and her hair dancing in the wind.
"May" I say, sitting down across from her and holding her hands. She glances down at our hands, then back to the city. She isn't looking at me. I glance outside and realize that our once sunny morning has turned into an overcast dark day. Small water droplets appear on the glass, as a rainfall begins.
"It's your birthday isn't it" I say after a few minutes. I keep my eyes fixed on the city as she turns and looks at me. I watch a person the size of an ant make their way down the street, staggering as he goes, frowning smaller and smaller. She stares at me, opens her mouth, then shuts it quickly and turns back toward the window.
"How did you know?" She whispers.
"Intuition" I say, slowly sliding next to her as her head drops to my shoulder. We sit in the windowsill like this, listening to the beating of our hearts. What is happening?Louise POV
As I scrape the last bits of food off my plate, I can't help but notice a feeling of someone staring at me. I look around and to my horror I see someone who wasn't there before, holding my daughters hand as she looks straight ahead.
"Mark...you're not" I start, as he disappears and Darcy and my heart drop to the floor, a blood curling scream emerging from her small body. My heart beats wildly as I fly to my daughter, as others begin to notice. Her small body in my arms seems so small, like when she was a baby.
"Louise what are you doing?!" Rosalie screams, shaking me by the shoulders. I look up at her, questioning her as why she isn't helping me, when I see Darcy standing behind her, her small face peering from around her legs. I look back down and notice I'm not holding my precious child. The room begins to spin, my vision blurring as I feel my head hit the ground, Rosalie's screams echoing in the darkness. A bright light emerges from around me, and I feel as if I'm flying...May's POV
I had been watching Louise for a few minutes as she seemed to be turning white and muttering to herself. In an instant she flew up and knelt down in the corner, scooping up air and crying hysterically. Darcy, who had been hiding behind Rosaline looked terrified at her mother who knelt before the floor holding nothing but empty air. Louise suddenly lets out a shriek and crashed to the floor her body shaking and twitching in an inhuman manor. I run to her and hold her, unsure if she is seizing or turning. Whatever the cause I couldn't let Davry watch.
"Get Darcy out of here now! Alfie help me!" I scream, as Louise's wrists wriggle out of my grip as I push down. Suddenly, Louise stops. Her eyes are wide open but she remains still. And unbreathing.
"Louise! Answer me! Louise can you hear me?" Alfie frantically calls. I lift her sleeve to take her pulse, only to find a blistering purple red and oozing blood gash along her wrist.
Louise was bit.
I glace up at her eyes just to watch them roll back into a black abyss. It's too late.
