“But sir you don’t understand. I have to find out who murdered my friend.”
“Laura, you know we can’t distribute confidential information and the murderer was wearing a balaclava anyway.” My head teacher informed me.
I took a deep breath and wished I could pace about the room, like an angry gerbil, but I think that if I tried to I’d probably look more like an injured rabbit because I still can’t walk without crutches. I decide to resort to plan B.
“Well then sir, please could you inform me of who wasn’t in class between 1:20 and 2:00?” I enquire in a passionate voice.
“I can’t give you any names but I can tell you that 10D2 were missing a lot of students on the afternoon of the murder, oh and Lauren please don’t talk to the media about all this because the school’s reputation would simply shatter if you did.”
“Anything for you sir.” I pronounce in a sarcastic tone, whilst rolling my eyes.
As I approach the door, I catch sight of Bailey through the blurred window and he opens the door for me, seeing as I can’t really move. It was quite evident that he had been listening to the entire conversation from the other side of the door so I had no need to explain what had happened.
“Ayesha’s in 10D2 isn’t she.” He remarked with a grimace.
“Yep.” I say without making eye contact with him.
“Hey guys. Wanna come round mine later? I haven’t seen you for so long. We could watch a movie or something.”
I suddenly recognise Sophie’s voice behind me.
“Sure, that would be nice.” I tell her, as Bailey nods in agreement.
“Are you gonna invite Ayesha?” Bailey asks cautiously.
“No. I thought it could just be us three.” She replies and Bailey sighs with relief.
Abruptly after this conversation, the fire bell begins to ring and an immediate stampede of teenagers hurry out to the field. In a sudden blur, I recall being knocked to the ground and seeing a fierce flame in the distance. For once in the history of fire alarms going off in this school, there’s actually a real fire.
Bailey steps to the side and it looks as though he’s deciding whether to do something or not. Before I realise what he’s about to do, he picks me up and carries me outside. I know he’s strong, but I didn’t think that even he could lift my weight.
Everyone is staring at me. This is so awkward. I hadn’t even considered that the school might burn down; to be honest I was very much occupied by the fact that a boy just picked me up and saved my life.
Everything is so blurry and I’m sitting on the wet grass outside of my school which is on fire. This doesn’t seem real. This is the sort of stuff you watch on the TV, how can this be real.
“What’s going on?” I ask innocently. I don’t even know who I’m asking. Just anyone that hears me.
“There’s a fire in F block and a lot of people are trapped inside. Do you want me to stay here with you because I should probably go and help.” Bailey explains to me.
“You can leave me if you promise to come back...because...I...I...love you.” I whimper truthfully.
He doesn’t say anything. He just runs towards the flaming building. Wait...what have I just done? What if he dies in there? What would I do then? Oh my god I am so dumb. I can’t believe I just let my true love enter a building which is actually on fire.
Real people shouldn’t have to worry about these things. My life feels as if I’m a character in a television programme. Why is this happening?
