Everything in her world was cold and black - no dreams, no hope, no wonder, no fun. Not anymore. The only thing she knew how to do was shut herself in her room, and cry until she couldn't anymore.
Lonely and isolated, she felt desperate but no matter how hard she tried to control it, it continued.
As she looked up at the ceiling, she could see snow falling. Her eyes scanned the room and around her the cold ice spread.
She shuddered, mumbling to herself, "conceal, don't feel".
This was the mantra she repeated as often as she could because no one else would be able to control her powers but herself.
The girl, Elsa, closed her eyes, slumping down against her bedroom door. She could hear her little sister playing outside, oh how she wished to be part of Anna's pretend games.
For comfort, she hugged her knees and buried her head in them while she listened to Anna.
"Do you want to build a snowman Elsa?" She whispered through the keyhole and Elsa opened her eyes. "we could play with dolls if you want"
She wanted nothing more than to play with Anna, like she used to, but she had to remain locked away until she learnt to control her powers
"Go away Anna" Elsa sighed, a heavy tone in her voice, closing her eyes again.
There was a small huff from the other side of the door followed by Anna's heavy footsteps dragging down the hall as she left Elsa alone.
Elsa kept her head in her knees as she felt an all too familiar chill spread across her body, covering the room,
"Aw, why don't go and play with your sister?" the voice said from the shadows, it taunted her, taking joy in the pain Elsa seemed to be suffering.
A villainous laugh followed, "oh wait, you can't because you'll hurt her again."
Elsa's eye shot open and she stood up, backing herself into the corner of the room. "g-go away Pitch!" She screamed and clutched her head, wishing for this hellish nightmare to disappear.
Pitch emerged from the shadows. He was adorned in a black gown, covering his towering grey figure. He loomed over the child, striking fear into her heart. "But Elsa, you know I'm never leaving you," He glided up to effortlessly, running his hand underneath her chin. He grinned sadistically, whispering, "your fear is all I need"
Then just as quickly as he appeared, he sank back into the shadows again – he was gone... for now.
Elsa let her body relax when the shadow disappeared, taking her hands away from her face, she steadied her breathing, trying to regain some sort of composure.
After making sure Pitch had gone, she went over to her dresser, looking at herself in the mirror. She stared hard at her reflection. The reflection must have it so easy, she thought to herself.
Elsa sighed and whispered to her mirror-self, "if I could live your life, I wouldn't have these powers, I wouldn't be shut in my room. Maybe I could be normal"
Turning away from the mirror, a heavy weight filled her heart. She may have been young, but she wasn't naive. She knew that reflections didn't talk back because she had been forced to grow up a little too early. Whilst Anna may be able to dream up make believe worlds, Elsa was forced to face a tough reality. Other children may believe reflections can talk but the girl knew better - a reflection could show you your true self and Elsa's screamed 'monster'.

For years and years, Elsa was shut in her room, tormented by Pitch. It was a vicious circle – the more she couldn't control her powers, the more scared she got, the more Pitch would appear, which would scare her even more and spiral her powers out of control.
