trying it out

"Lizzie, can you zip me up?" Violet asked, having just slipped her party dress on.

It was Saturday night, and Violet was getting ready to attend her first university party. She was beyond nervous, but Elizabeth was doing a fairly good job of keeping her calm. She assured her no one would pressure her into doing anything she didn't want to, Elizabeth would make sure of it.

Last night, Elizabeth had dragged Violet out to the shopping centre, telling her that she had no suitable party clothing. Violet hadn't cared, but apparently, it was necessary. Violet was glad that Elizabeth hadn't tried to get her into some revealing, skimpy outfit, but instead she showed her girly dresses that complimented Violet perfectly.

Violet had chosen a red dress. It fell about three inches above her knee, and it flowed out slightly. Even though Violet didn't wear dresses, she felt like this dress was really her. Elizabeth had found a cropped leather jacket to go over it since it was pretty cool outside. Somehow, Elizabeth had even convinced her to wear boots that had a heel in them.

Violet had worn heels before, obviously, but she despised them.

"You're perfect." Elizabeth told her, stepping away so that Violet could see herself in the mirror.

Violet looked at herself. She felt different, she almost felt normal. It was weird.

Her hand drifted up to her chest and picked up the treble clef pendant hanging on her necklace. Elizabeth had put waves in her hair and pulled them to the side, her fringe fell on her forehead, just on top of her glasses frames. Violet had even managed to put her own mascara on.

She could almost consider herself to be... pretty. But as Elizabeth stood next to her to check her reflection, Violet frowned slightly. She would never look half as good as her beautiful roommate.

It was so unlike Violet to envy another girl's physical appearance, she didn't know what was going on inside her head. Usually, her looks were the last thing on her mind, but lately that had been changing.

Alexander was to be waiting outside to pick them up right about now, so when Elizabeth pulled on her wrist and said "C'mon, Violet!", Violet sighed and gave herself one last weary look in the mirror before being dragged out of her dorm room.

Violet was getting more and more nervous to go to this party, which Niall was throwing. Alexander was going on about how fun it was going to be to see Violet all weirded out and uncomfortable in a party setting.

Elizabeth hit his shoulder. "Alex, stop."

"Y'know, Lizzie, maybe you guys should just drop me and I'll take the bus back to the dorm..." Violet suggested nervously, picking at her nails.

"Violet! No, this is going to be fun!" Elizabeth assured her, turning around and pouting. "Louis invited you. Don't disappoint him!"

Violet groaned and rolled her eyes. She knew there was no way she was going to get out of this. She would just have to suck it up and get it over with.

"Where are you going tonight?" Liam asked Zayn as he walked into his friend's dorm all dressed and ready to go somewhere.

"Niall's." Zayn said. "Aren't you coming?"

Liam shook his head. "No. I’ve got a huge history assignment and then I was actually going to see if Violet wanted to help me out with unboxing some things at the record shop."

"Mate, Violet is going to Niall's." Zayn told him, raising an eyebrow in amusement.

Liam's eyebrows pulled together. "She can’t be.” Violet was not the partying type, definitely not. Rather, she hadn’t said she was… she didn’t seem to be, either. But, Liam guessed you never really knew someone.
