I scratched at my dry scalp, grimacing in disgust as I quickly pulled the fading blue hair into a bun in an attempt to mask the fact it was greasy. Because of the humidity it seemed much worse, frizzing out of control, though I wasn't the only one dealing with this problem...most of the women in the group wishing for a nice, long shower and possibly even a brush. We were all gathered in an abandoned house, scrounging for food that could have been left behind when the world ended. I sat on the living room floor next to Lori, handing her the last bit of my granola bar as she ran a hand over her pregnant belly. She looked at me and smiled gratefully, taking it from my hand. "Thank you." she said softly as she took a bite, chewing slowly.
I looked over at Daryl, who had began to pluck the feathers out of an owl he'd found upstairs, Rick pacing in front of him as Carl entered the small, crowded room. He knelt beside his mother, setting down what looked to be a large can of dog food as he pulled out his knife, and he was just about to open it when Rick bent down to pick it up. He looked it over for a moment, making us jump when he chucked it into the fireplace. Carl looked up at him with a defeated look in his eyes, and in that moment, I felt sorry for the young boy. T-dog whistled at Rick, nodding his head towards a group of walkers closing in on the house.
The group acted immediately, everyone grabbing what they needed before heading out the back door, wanting to avoid them as much as we could. Glenn headed to the driver's side of one of the cars as we tossed our supplies in the back, closing the trunk before we separated into the few vehicles we had, driving off just as the herd completely surrounded the home we took shelter in just moments before. I let out a relieved sigh, content with living another day as I listened to the rumble of Daryl's bike. "On to the next one, huh?" Carol spoke with a playful grin, and I laughed softly before letting my eyes flutter closed, allowing my body to shut down temporarily so I could finally get some rest.
