Night had fallen, everyone gathered around a small fire as we ate. "Just like mom used to make," Glenn stated with a satisfied moan as he picked the remaining meat off the bone, Maggie glancing at him briefly with a smile before he threw the bone out into the field. I looked over at Lori, who was watching Rick from afar. "Tomorrow we'll put all the bodies together. Want to keep them away from that water. Now, if we can dig a canal under the fence, we'll have plenty of fresh water." T-dog explained softly, and I nodded as Hershel spoke up. "And this soil is good. We could plant some seed, grow some tomatoes, cucumbers, soybeans." The old man sat up, looking over at Rick as he pointed.
"That's his third time around. If there was any part of it compromised, he'd have found it by now." I looked down at my plate and then over at Beth, who'd leaned in closer to Lori. "This'll be a good place to have the baby. Safe." I fixed a second plate as Lori smiled at her, handing it to Carol. "Maybe you could get Daryl to eat something?" I suggested, glancing over to where he kept watch on top of a truck, and Carol grinned as she took the plate. "Maybe," she whispered before getting up, and I watched her walk away as Hershel spoke up once more. "Bethy, sing Paddy Reilly for me. I haven't heard that, I think, since your mother was alive." I watched as Daryl seemed to massage Carol's shoulder, quickly looking away as Maggie intervened. "Daddy, not that one, please." There was a small silence as the man looked at his eldest daughter before choosing a different song.
"No one wants to hear." Beth said softly, almost looking embarrassed, and I quickly spoke. "Why not?" She looked at me, taking a deep breath before she began to sing. Everyone listened quietly, and I smiled to myself her sweet voice filled the air. Both Daryl and Carol joined the group as Maggie began to sing along, her thick southern drawl soothing me. Rick came over, crouching down as he held out a container of food for Lori, who took some quietly. He looked like he had a plan, the look in his eyes giving it away as he listened to Beth, and I looked over at Daryl. He met my gaze, holding it for a few seconds until I was forced to look away, the intensity in his stare making me feel awkward.
The song slowly came to an end, leaving behind a silence as everyone looked amongst each other. "Beautiful." Hershel mumbled, and Rick scratched at his chin. "Better all turn in. I'll take watch over there," Rick began to say, "Got a big day tomorrow." We looked in his direction, Glenn asking what he meant. "Look, I know we're all exhausted. This was a great win. But we've got to push just a little bit more." he stated softly, and I narrowed my eyes. "Most of the walkers are dressed as guards and prisoners-- looks like this place fell pretty early. It could mean the supplies may be intact. They'd have an infirmary, a commissary."
"An armory?" Daryl interrupted softly, and Rick quickly nodded. "That would be outside the prison itself, but not too far away. Warden's offices would have info on the location. Weapons, food, medicine. This place could be a gold mine." I listened to his words, knowing he had a point. "We're dangerously low on ammo. We'd run out before we'd make a dent." Hershel chimed in his thoughts, another valid point. "That's why we have to go in there...hand to hand. After all we've been through, we can handle it, I know it." He looked down at Carl, who was sprawled out in the grass beside him. "These assholes don't stand a chance."
