The two friends walked to the bakery hoping that Cress would get the job.
The girls walked in to be greeted with the smell of pastries, their stomachs growled with hunger. They didn't realize they were that hungry until now, the smell didn't help ease their hunger. Cress and Blaze stood at the counter waiting for someone to assist them.
Cress realized that she'll never have enough food and money. No matter what she does, even if she gets a hundred jobs it's still not enough. But, she's thankful for at least having a meal once a day because not everyone has the privilege.
They waited for two minutes, yet still, no one came. Blaze cleared her throat out loud hoping someone would pay attention, but it didn't work.
Blaze was fierce and stubborn, she has to be for her younger siblings. There were times Blaze had to beg people for a piece of bread and some water because her father was a drunk who at some point will drink himself to death.
She also may or may not be a bit rude and impatient. "Excuse me can someone help us or do we keep on standing here like idiots?" Suddenly a boy wearing glasses, with his head in a book stood behind the counter "Yes how can I help you?" he didn't bother looking at the two girls.
Cress waved her hands in front of him "Hello, you know that we're standing right in front of you right?" the boy slowly lifted his eyes to meet theirs, he gave them an apologetic smile "sorry for being rude, I just can't stop reading this book"
"We can see that" Blaze answered sarcastically, Cress asked him "Can I talk to the owners? it's kind of important" he nodded and climbed the stairs. Cress was sweating "Blaze what if they say no to me? or worse shout at me? I really want this job"
Blaze put her hand on her shoulder trying to comfort her friend "If they said no we'll look for another job " Cress nodded.
Mrs. Mellark walked down the stairs and stood behind the counter "Hello girls did you call me?" Cress stepped forward taking a deep breath "Actually I did Mrs. Mellark. I wanted to ask you if you could hire me. I'll work and do anything you want"
The mother had a stern look on her face, not revealing any signs of anger "No, I'm sorry I can't it's a family business we don't hire anyone" Cress didn't drop the subject "Please, I'm begging you. I need this job my family needs the money"
Mrs. Mellark looked at her and saw how desperate Cress was, she didn't want to argue with the young girl. She was surprised by the girl's confidence, she was known to be scary and yet the girl didn't hesitate to ask her for a job.
"Fine you can work here, come by tomorrow and I'll give you something to do i won't pay much" the girl jumped with excitement "Thank you Mrs. Mellark I won't disappoint you" the mother rolled her eyes and muttered to herself while going upstairs "like I haven't heard that before."
Both of the girls laughed at the mother quietly. The boy with the glasses came back and this time his hands were empty "so what did you want from my mother?" Cress shrugged and answered "I wanted her to ask her if I can work here" the boy stifled a laugh, he told them to wait a minute the two girls looked at each other with confusion wondering what's so funny.
He came back with a tall blonde boy who Cress found familiar "So I heard that you asked my mother for a job?" Blaze answered instead of Cress "she did so what?" the two boys started laughing, the two girls waited for them to finish laughing. "Are you two done now? and why is this so funny?" The tall blonde boy started explaining "well you know our mother is known to be quiet scary"
Blaze had a deadpanned look on her face "at least she was tough enough to actually ask her" the two boys nodded impressed by Cress. The boy gave them a side smile that would have most girls drooling.
She had to admit it was killer side smile "I'm Tristan, and my brother here is Aaron" Blaze spoke up "well I'm Blaze and my friend here is Cress" they both nodded with acknowledgment.
Another boy entered from the kitchen wearing an apron that was covered with black spots and flour, he was holding a rack of freshly baked buns.
He had a genuine smile plastered on his face as he put the rack on the counter. He looked up and saw the girl he met earlier and her friend, he was shocked to see her here of all places yet he couldn't help but feel a bit happy about it.
"I didn't expect you to see you here" he spoke first, she was too shocked to see him here. She didn't know that he was a baker let alone a Mellark.
She didn't want to see him, she still felt embarrassed about how she ended their conversation earlier today. "same goes to you, I can only guess that you're a Mellark too" he nodded, Blaze threw her hands up with frustration "how many are you?" Tristan laughed "we're just three thank god, Peeta is the youngest of the Mellark clan so he gets to be treated like a servant"
Peeta rolled his eyes at his brother's remark, he wanted to ask Cress if she wanted to eat something he saw her and Blaze stealing the buns and stashing them into their bags. "You know that we can see you right?" asked Aaron, both of the girls gave them a guilty smile with their mouths full of food.
The three brothers laughed at the girls reaction, Tristan asked "how's the food?" the two girls answered at the same time
"It's heavenly"
"I love it"
Peeta chuckled "I'm glad that you like it" Peter looked at his younger sibling "do you know that Cress will be working here? she asked mom and she said yes" Peeta looked at Cress with astonishment "I can't believe you did that" Cress nodded proudly.
Tristan asked with curiousity "why did you ask for a job?" Cress looked him in the eyes and said "because if I didn't soon enough my family will start starving" with that Cress gave them a weak smile and left.
