Hi, Kat. I'm 13 and I've got way over protective parents. I really like my best friend's guy best friend and my best friend told me that he likes me back. My parents are against me dating and didn't approve of my best friend dating. My BFF is trying to get him to ask me out. I have 2 questions:
1. What should I do with my parents?
2. Should I say yes if he asks me out?
I just don't know what to do. It'd be very helpful if you could give me some advice.

Dear Oceanluver13,
Sounds like you have a very common problem. For your first question, they are either: a. trying to protect you, b. are afraid you'll do something foolish, or c. don't want you to grow up too soon. You need to sit them down and have a serious conversation with them on why you can't have a boyfriend. Ask them if there is anything that you can do to prove that you are responsible enough to handle a boyfriend. If they still say no, just go with it because first of all, throwing a temper tantrum doesn't sound very grown up, now does it? And second of all, you are still thirteen. Imaging all the fish in the big sea!
To answer your second question (assuming your parents say yes) then the only one who can answer that is you. Does this boy have a rep for breaking hearts? Can you trust him? Do you really like him? I'm not saying no, but remember, you are still young. Anyway, if you really like this boy, go for it! If you find that you don't just try a gentle, "I like you, but not in that way. I respect you too much to think of you in that way." Otherwise, you seem very capable to me and boys would be so lucky if they realized that it's girls like us that they really need. Hope you'll find the one, one day, girl! Girls gotta stick together.
Hope this helps.
xoxo,
Kat
