Alona followed Arlo up the stairs and down the hall to his bedroom. He didn't bother to look in Alona's room. She glanced in as she passed by; even though the room was dimly lit she could see that there was no one inside.
Arlo slowly pushed the door to his room open. On the bed, laid the huge man that Alona assumed was Nik. Arlo clicked on the light, the whirring of the generator outside grew louder as the light overhead flickered to life. Alona noticed the black pistol pointed at the door, in the sleeping man's hand.
"Nik." Arlo called.
He spoke with his eyes still closed, "Have the pigs come to get me already?" He spoke with a very distinct accent. Alona assumed by pigs he meant the Officials.
"Why did you skip the meeting?" Arlo asked angrily.
Nik sat up in the bed and rubbed his face; his hands were covered in black tattoos, unlike Arlo's iridescent blue tattoos. He placed the pistol down on the bed.
"Well I already know what he'll say." He stood up, revealing how tall and big he was, "So we left."
He turned to look at them and that's when Alona saw his eyes. They were solid black. A shiver ran down her back as she stared at him.
He was taller than Arlo and more muscular, which shocked Alona. Arlo was already a big guy and here was a Volkov who was much bigger. He wore black pants and a navy blue, long sleeve shirt, the sleeves of his shirt were pushed up to his elbows. His black hair was shaved along the sides on the top of his head he had short spiky hair.
Arlo answered, "That's no excuse. You have to respect Drew. This is his domain."
Nik didn't answer, he only lowered his head slightly. She could tell he was looking at Arlo, even though his eyes were two black spots. She examined his exposed forearms; they were covered in different designs and figures. The only tattoo she could make out was a skull with exaggerated canine teeth on his left arm below his wrist. She assumed it was a Volkov skull.
"This is Alona." Arlo turned to her. Nik's eyes fell on her. She tried to smile but all she saw was his eyes; add the black spit dribbling out of his mouth and down his neck, thick black veins, and you had one of her nightmares. She had seen those solid black eyes several times, nothing good ever came from them.
He turned his attention to her and nodded once in her direction, refusing to speak.
"This is Nik." Arlo replied for him. After an awkward silence, he said, "Let's go make sure Feliks doesn't eat everything."
Alona led the way out of the room and down the stairs. She was eager to get away from Nik.
When she entered the kitchen downstairs she noticed that Feliks was mumbling to himself.
He turned to her as he realized she entered the room. She seemed to have interrupted him mid-sentence, "Hey. I never got your name." He said casually as if she hadn't just caught him talking to himself.
"Alona." She answered.
"So you're the new chick." He glanced at Arlo and Nik entering the kitchen, "Interesting."
She smiled, "Yeah, I suppose I am."
Arlo moved next to Alona. Alona noticed he was closer to her than normal.
"So Arlo, what's for dinner?" Feliks asked, glancing at Nik and smirking.
Alona's blood ran cold. She suddenly remembered she was in a room full of aliens. Nik chuckled like an evil Santa Claus.
Arlo replied quickly, "Knock it off." He gave them the same look as he gave the men in the cave, deadly.
Feliks' smile faded.
